I was driving home and after getting off the interstate (about 2 miles from my house) I heard a clunking sound coming from the left front wheel. I opted to finish driving it home since I was so close. I couldn't hear the clunking sound over the sound of the engine, but I could hear it whenever I let off the gas.

I turned left into my neighborhood and it acted normal then I turned left again to go on my street.. as I turned left over a lot of snow the rear end swung out pretty far. Then I turned left into my driveway and the rear end swung out very far again and it had a heck of a time getting up the driveway. It didn't want to move forward at all. (Side note - shortly after I left where I was at earlier it seemed like I had to give it a lot more gas than normal at one set of lights to get it to move forward - that was about 25 minutes prior to getting home).

I put it in park since it didn't want to go forward and let off the brakes and it slid backward! So then I called people in the house to open the garage door so I could keep the brake pedal depressed. Then I tried to get it into the garage. My driveway is inclined btw. I got it moving forward without giving it too much gas, but only the rear wheels were spinning.

I let it come to a stop before getting into the garage to see what would happen. This time the rear wheels were the only thing spinning again and the front started going sideways towards the side of the garage. So we threw some gravel by the rear tires. It got some traction then and went into the garage.

What could be making it RWD? And not stay parked when I put it in park? And what's clunking from the front left wheel?

Is the transmission or transfer case damaged at this point?

Make sure the drivers half shaft didn't pop out of the transmission. If the 2 bolts that hold the intermediate shaft in have removed themselves, the axle can come out of the trans during left turns.

I am pretty sure the two bolts are 11 mm metric bolts.. but after searching the last 2 hours at hardware stores, home improvement stores, and auto parts stores I have yet to find any 11 mm bolts.

Because that's not the proper thread size.

They are 10mm with 14mm heads.

Just FYI on our cars if a bolts has: (factory bolts, you'll find that hardware store bolts are usually 1mm bigger head than I have listed for these same threads)

10mm head = 6mm thread
12mm head = 8mm thread
14mm head = 10mm thread
17mm head = 12mm thread

It didn't leave a trail of tranny fluid. I checked the tranny fluid last night shorty after I got home to make sure it didn't smell burnt. I didn't have it running in neutral when I checked it though.. it was just off and in park but it was at the hot mark. It was very snowy/icey out last night.

The 10mm bolts we tried were too small and the 12mm ones were too big? We're gonna go pick up some more to try..

Point is that the axle seals the transmission. If the axle comes out, there's nothing stopping the fluid from pouring out. Check the level is what they're saying, not the condition.

Running yes, neutral or park, I don't really think it makes a difference. Think it needs to be warmed up/circulated tho, so it might need to be driven a lil first. Not positive though, you'll have to ask an auto person.

Kk. I think I know what caused this. The roads are very shitty right now and when I was on the interestate one of the joints between the bridge and the rest of the interstate practically threw my car sideways. It was much harsher than usual going from the bridge to the rest of the interstate. I thought to myself at the time, wow, if my car wasn't AWD and there was more ice there that woulda thrown me into the wall. That's probably what messed it up  There's way too many potholes everywhere and I try my best to avoid them. I was even in the right lane on that bridge cuz I've found the further to the right on the interstate I am over those joints the less harsh they are. Didn't work out last night tho.

Someone told me that the Cadillac dealer has 11x1.5 and 11x2 bolts.. so I will try those Monday. Hopefully one of those works.

There is something wrong with it if 10mm bolts don't fit. ARe you getting the correct thread? They are 10x1.25 bolts which are not easy to come by. There is nothing on our cars other than 2g head studs that are 11mm. Maybe that is why they are no longer in there.

None of what you described would cause the bolts for the axle to just come out. The axle itself will fall out under normal driving without those bolts holding it in.

You need to be more specific. Metric grade 11.xx = American grade 8. Do not buy Metric grade 5 bolts. (if they even exist that is.
