Well tonight I had a bit of a scare. Something happened that I have never experienced. I would like to share this experience so maybe some of you don't chase your tails for 30 minutes like I did (1 week for the turbo challenged.)

So I just installed HKS cams and slew of other new parts, went out for some tuning. My halman boost controller was set at 24psi, I have never ever had an issue with the controller its worked flawlessly since I bought it new. I moved the feed for the BC to the J-pipe from the intake manifold. This dropped the boost to 20psi. I made a few pulls at 20psi obviously needed more power. I turned the boost controller knob 1 turn in. Next pull 25psi car pulled extremely hard. Two more pulls feeling pretty good. AFR's look decent, timing good, no knock present, butt dyno is feeling it. One final pull, 2000rpms I go WOT the car feels like a turtle. WTF? I look at my boost gauge 14psi. "Thats not right." Make another pull 14psi. I pop the hood inspect for hoses loose, look at my log everything looks fine, Car drives normal as it was a second ago. I come home boost leak test nothing, Check the turbo perfect, compression test was low(Stock 6-bolt its tired but it shouldn't make it not boost) Call my friend the engineer he says check your boost controller. So I pull it apart and this is what I find.

All the orange inside is rust.

The springs rusted pretty badly

The ball also rusted.

This is something I have never even thought about. So just letting other people know if you haven't taken your ball/spring boost controller apart. Take a couple minutes on day and do it, see what you find. Clean the crap out of it and lubed it up. I know I will.

This public service announcement has been brought you by gtsiawd96.

I take my MBC apart every spring and clean it out and WD40 it to keep the rust away. I had mine stick closed one time lol... never again.

Good job with finding your problem, i take it your car is running great again?
No it was getting late, I was getting tired. I don't have a tubing/rifle brush either to clean the bore of the housing out. I'm going to get one tomorrow and clean it up good.

Same here. 8 years in the biz and this was a first for me. It boggled my mind for a second. It was so simple I looked right past it.

This thread caused me to pull apart my Hallman ES just in case. Thankfully nothing was rusted, everything still looked perfect. Which makes me wonder, just what kind of conditions your MBC has seen to make it rust that bad.

I'm not sure. I live 5 minutes from the ocean that could have a lot to do with it. That and any time you have a pressure drop or restriction condensation can form. The salt air and condensation were probably the biggest factors

Well I live in Pensacola, FL. Right near(basically on) the Gulf of Mexico, so that why I was worried too. Plus I think this MBC has even survived 4+ years of CO weather and blizzards/salt as well.

Admit it, you dunked the bastard in salt water and left it out in the open. Don't deny it. :p
