I normally take my time and have it done anywhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours depending on how much cleaning, inspection, and torque checking of every bolt, etc. that I am doing along the way.

I have also pulled my transmission off the car at least 40 times alone on the Eclipse, let alone my other current/previous DSM's and friends.

With the car at its current level, it really just takes substantially longer than it needs to due to the inspection process, and distractions.

Personally, I enjoy doing transmission pulls with the car fully up on jackstands about 2ft off the ground. It is a comfortable height to work above, and underneath the car, and easy as hell to use a jack for transmission support going in or out, and using a jackstand to support the engine along the oil pan flange.

Doing it on a lift is really nice for overall inspection of the vehicle, but I think it is a bit more difficult to pull and install the transmission itself.

The biggest issue I have doing it is that the trans has to get tilted downward toward the pass side when removing to get past the wheel well and go back in the same way. That's the only part I ever get hung up on which isn't really a big deal.

It does help to have a lift though. I usually get the trans up on my shoulder and then have a friend guide it in when reinstalling.

I may be pulling mine soon anyway. The synchros are shot and I think the fork is a bit worn out.

hello, another noob here. so i am pulling my motor and tranny next weekend, should i unbolt lower ball joint and control arm or 2 bolts in shock mount like mentioned? i would really like to leave my axles bolted to hubs! thanks to whoever can help me!!

Here is the process I followed for my 95 gs-t, putting it up for criticism because I have a feeling I will be going through trannies:

I am pulling this from memory at work so bear with me...

( my battery is relocated)
1. Remove MAF and MAF intake
2. Remove UICP
3. Remove shifter cables
4. Remove starter
5. Remove all wiring in the way( coolant temp sensors, o2 sensors, speed sensor, reverse sensor)
6. Unbolt front and rear transmission mounts
7. Un bolt and remove subframe crossmember
8. Remove front tires
9. Unbolt brake lines and ziptie in a high position
10. Unbolt tie rod ends from hubs
11. unbolt hubs from upper a arms
12. Remove CV axles from transmission

By now the engine and transmission will need support to go further.

13. I chose to support the motor with a jack and the transmission with my motor lift.

14. Unbolt the passenger side transmission mount by unbolting the 4 studs and 1 bolt from the mount instead of the 1 long bolt.

15. Lower transmission till motor rests on jack.

16. Unbolt all transmission bolts.

17. Pry transmission from block. Motor and Trans should be low enough for trans to clear frame by now.

18. Lower the newly freed transmission.

Thats how I did it.

well thanks,i guess it is up to each individual because after searching for 2 days now it seems some people undo lower ball joint and tie rods while others say the top a arms. and then others say brake lines and shock mounts? i just want to remove the engine and tranny together! i will post how long it took this noob next weekend! thanks for all the info

Ahh I left out unbolting the clutch line or slave cylinder. I normally just unhook the line but I can see how unbolting the entire slave would keep you from having to bleed the clutch.

Shh. This thread is dedicated to all out nut-swinging awesomeness on who can pull a tranny the fastest.

We can tell who's had more drivetrain problems this way.

Anyone who can do a clutch job in under an hour, is an honorary god, because breaking shit is leet.
Yeah, i've gotten to drive my car 2months in the last two years with two rebuilds so far. You learn how to cut time :). As for the weight i usually beast that thing up onto the dowels while im inside the pass fender. And amazingly my f350 super duty manual tranny is lighter.

This should be broken down into a 1g and 2g catagory since they are very different to work on, and the 1g is much quicker. Also a manual versus automatic catagory is in order. lol
