Lately it seems I've come across more and more 3rd gen lifters that are dead on arrival.

I bought a full set for my car and eventually sold them to someone else. He complained that some of them never pumped up. I recently bought a new set of lifters for my nephews car and so far I've found four of them that won't pump up. Since the engine is still tapping, I suspect that there are at least 2 more.

What is going on? I would believe that it is installer error but I've installed way too many lifters before for it to be something I did wrong.

That's just one way of priming an engine with oil, It doesn't do anything for brand new defective parts.

Another way if you aren't running balance shafts is to use a drill with a socket driver on it to spin the oil pump before you put the timing belt on.

This method was adapted from the v8 guys turning the distributor shaft to pump oil through.

When I first installed mine, they were still a little noisy after 30 minutes of idling. I idled it again after sitting overnight for another 15-20 minutes and they got quiet. This was using Topline lifters about 3 years ago, so quality may have went down since then.

Did you line up the hole on the 3g lifter when you installed them?
I got mine off ebay 4years ago and have no issues.

I have lined up the holes, not lined up the holes, pre-oiled them and installed them dry before and never had an issue with brand new lifters not pumping up before.

I am assuming that all the manufacturers are getting their lifters from the same company. I am going to try a set of Topline's to see if they are somehow different.
