My 95 GST has been having trouble idling pretty much ever since I got it. I had such a long laundry list of fixes that I'm just now getting around to mess with the idle.

I have a 14b turbo, pushing stockish 9 lbs, a FMIC, 450cc blue top injectors, and recently went through and did a egr block off and cleaned all the unnecessary vacuum lines. It has trouble trying to idle and gets really boggy when I tap the gas to try to keep it alive. If I dont mess with anything, just start it up and see how long it runs, it runs for about 5-10 seconds.

HOWEVER, I randomly pulled off my cold air intake setup from the turbo, and started it up to see what it would do and sound like, and wallah, it ran damn near perfect. According to my A/F ratio gauge its running rich, but it idles at a solid 1100 rpm, sounds great, and even drives great. I put a wire mesh over the mouth of the turbo so random crap didnt get in it and took it for a short drive. Besides what I believe to be a case of boost creep/ fuel cut, it ran gorgeously.

I am thinking that it may be a semi malfunctioning MAF sensor, because about a month ago it still had the same symptoms, but it popped a MAF code. I noticed that the connector for it was dirty as hell and had corrosion on it, so I cleaned just the connector, and it acted better and the code went away and didn't come back.

I really appreciate all the input that you guys give, and if anyone has had any experience with this before I am all ears. Long story short, It runs like shit when my air intake is connected to the turbo, and it runs great when its not connected, except for the fact that its running rich. (it also has a case of potential boost creep/ fuel cut, but that is a different post)

Respect,
Dr. Dan

Ok, I will keep it in the garage until I can scrape up enough for a new MAF. I figured that was the problem, but wasn't sure since the code for it never came back. I did drive it for about ten minutes, but I didnt race it or hear any explosions or anything like that. My car should be fine right?

Ya that guy is wrong. You can drive without your MAF. It will just run your car in closed loop mode. Meaning it does not use your o2 sensors to moniter fuel. Makes it run rich to be safe. Sounds like your problem is a vaccumm/boost leak. The reason your car may run better without the maf plugged in is because your MAF is telling your ECU that its taking in say...4 counts and your o2 is saying no...I am counting 6 counts, so the ECU thinks its running lean and thus dumps more fuel to make the o2 happy.

Before you go spend the money on a new MAF I would check for any leaks, then go to the MAF for the problem. It never hurts to be carefull, and save money.

Thanks for that info sleeps, but I'm 99.9% sure that I dont have any leaks. I recently did a vacuum delete and egr block, so all my vacuum sources are either plugged or tapped. I do have the two FIAV vac sources uncapped, should I cap those off? Really the only reason I left them open was because I couldn't find anything to plug it with. Thanks for the help.

I will cap the FIAV under the throttle body, and run a test to see if that was messing up the idle, if that doesn't fix it I will clean the MAF with a MAF cleaner to see if that fixes the problem, if not I will go ahead and replace the MAF with a new unit and report my findings back here if anyone is interested.

Update

I capped the FIAV under the throttle body, no real change whatsoever, but I also loosened up the adjuster on top of my ebay knockoff bov, and it actually helped a considerable amount. I bought some maf cleaner and cleaned it as well, and it stays running and runs alright, it still says that it is running rich though.

Also, I have a little rattling noise when I gently shake the intake, is that a bad thing? I dont get any codes or anything, and I can see the MAF element, it is in good shape, is there more than one element or is it just a single element that it relies on?

In the other thread you started it says you are VTA. That will cause you to run rich and have idle problems.
