1g Auto trans DSM randomly dieing

So this is for a buddy of mine. His girlfriend's car keeps dieing. He said she will be driving along, hear a pop up under the dash and the car will die. She will jiggle/shake the gear selector, and try and start the car, and it will start right up. Then a mile or two later, the same thing, pop, die.

Any ideas?

A little more detail/info from the owner of the car.

So this morning, she hopped in her car to leave for work. The car cranked, but wouldn't start. She wiggled the shifter and it started afterward. the car randomly dies while she's driving it, but starts right back up if you wiggle the shifter (it's automatic). Every time it dies, you can hear a click come from in the dash, right behind the radio. It won't start again until you hear that click and the check engine light comes back on. It almost sounds like a relay clicking, but I couldn't find any relays inside the dash when I looked at the repair manual.
