those 2 speed trannys have 3 gears and work on the street all the time. You will never make a real strong RWD car with a tranverse engine, and buy a rwd car if you want one....MR2?

Maybe you could swap the whole motor and tranny into the hatch. Its been done before. Not with a DSM though i dont think. But i saw somewhere a dodge rampage had a motor up front and one in the bed and ran 10's i think. Also i saw a CRX with a dodge 2.2 turbo with the motor in the hatch. Might be a cool project.

It would be expensive. You would have to have air ducts for the radiator and intercooler plus custom exhaust and a lot of time and money.

hey I live in Maryland and my friends have converted there AWD talon to rear wheel drive, they used a jap spec tranny.I'm not sure what else they did to make this work.but the car on the street the car is a beast.

for the amount of money you would spend to convert a fwd dsm to rwd you might as well just buy a used viper for $30k.

Considering the amount of custom fabrication necessary, plus all the modifications you would want to make decent power, it just isn't worth it.

If you were at least starting with an awd you would at least be more than half way there. You could do it with a welded center diff and disabled front drive, but i think reliability would suffer, not to mention that there would still be a lot of driveline losses.

I have a strange feeling you are just a dreamer, but if you are serious, get an awd and go from there.

If you want a severe tail out attitude then all you really need to do is suspension tuning. Stiffen up the chasis and put a huge ass anti-swaybar in the rear and your back end will be swingin twards the ditch before you know it :p Should only cost you a couple hundred $.

THIS is advanced tech? Seriously come on, this is not advanced, it's stupid. Why in the hell would you want to waste the money to do something useless? If you're beating the crap out of the car senslessly why do you care what the body panels look like? Buy a 240sx or an old Z car and be done with it.

Somebody should remove this thread, it's a waste of bandwith.

You're welcome. That's nice. It's also nice that you didn't do too well in reading comprehension during school. I didn't say that your idea was stupid, you have to reread third sentence and think a little bit (just don't let the pea you call a brain explode ;)) there sparky. It implied that the activity of drifting was useless. Which it is. Yes it's fun to do when you're screwing around, BUT it does not make for a quicker line. On top of that most tracks would not be too happy with you for screwing around like that. So I'm guessing you want to drift on the street? What happens when that car you didn't expect happens to be in the lane you just "drifted" into? Really responsible.

So let me get this straight you want to spend thousands of dollars so that you can slide a car around sideways on public roads while risking the lives of innocent peopele? Yeah really cool.

Oh and your is possesive, you mean you're, as in you are. Have fun in second grade.

ouch! your on fire now! whats with the teachers pet deal? i didnt know this was gona be graded. what are you a traffic cop? have you ever raced on public streets? im sure you have! looks like your morals dont have a say on this one. hey man, really though. chill out on the nit picking shit. your not perfect either.

This one time, in band camp...

This is NOT a technical thread. A technical example of this thread would be "I'm in the process of building a RWD DSM but need help making some calculations on mating a xyz rear end to the abc tranny."

Bottom line, there are TWO RWD's out there that I know of and they both were built by Buschur. They are also RACE cars. It simply doesn't make sense to do it to a street car. If you had that much cash, you wouldn't be driving a 1990 DSM.

Dream on.

2. Skylines are able to drift cause they can electroniclly change how much torque goes to the front or back up to 90% rear and 10% front. And back to 50-50. Too bad we dont have that option, but then again our cars didnt cost 80k.
You can drift ANY setup FF, F4, FR. Just need STIFF rear suspension and some skill. You have to transfer the weight off ther rear (tap brakes) and remove traction from the rear (ebrake, generous throttle). Super Street has an awsome drift article from a couple years ago. I'll scan it when I get home. BTW AWD drifting is easier than FF but safer than FR and looks cooler than both!

My brother got it and cut all the pics out so half of it is gone. :( Does anybody have the articl with the "Slide Squad" in it. Flat green 4G civic hatch and a blue 240SX with a sylvia conversion were the main topic in the article but it is useful for everyone.

well first, this thread is FAR from advanced tech. second off..i can attest to it being easy to drift a FWD car. i did it lots of times a couple weeks ago when i tried my hand at road racing for the first time. i had a tendency to hit the brakes in the banked turns...not good. i spun out a total of 3 times in my 5 runs...however i also had some nice tail out drifting that i was able to control as well. Next time i will be better prepared and hopefully know the limits of my car.

Ok ok, I've talked to Buschur Racing about this before and was quoted anywhere from $7000-$10,000 and 6-10 months without your car. For that price you can but a Nice MR2, AE86(and of course do a swap), an FC, maybe find a nice deal on a FD, basically any RWD domestic but isn't too new. there is alot of different cars you can get for that much .....but for those that are really into getting their eclipse to RWD....more power to ya.....cause within a couple of years thats what Im heading towards...

Hoping to be the First RSt with RWD

Uhm.....its Sauce, not 'sause'.

This thread ranks up there with "Make my car a twin turbo" and "Supercharged/Turbocharge a DSM: anyone done this?".

The point Mr Pickle (gerknme) is that you can drift anything. If all you are looking for is to be able to drift a car, why spend >$10,000 converting your 1G to rear wheel drive? Why not just setup the suspension to do the same thing? My 96 AWD is setup to be an autocrosser/semi-roadracer. In street trim, I can swing my ass end any time I want. Which brings me to point 2.

Point 2 is that a good driver can drift anything. Ever watch Starsky and Hutch? I am not implying that you suck as a driver however maybe you should go try to get your GST to drift somewhere away from people. Hell, watch Speedvision with the SCCA rallies. There are number of GVR4's and 1G in the series that drift like a mofo.
