Ive searched a lot. I apologize if there is a thread out there.

I will be out in my garage working on my friends cars or cleaning up. Out of no where my car will let off a loud humming noise. And one time it happened and i was working on it. I smelled gas in the back of the engine compartment by the fuel filter. I only smell gas when this noise happens. Could the fuel pump be pumping randomly pumping gas through the system? I was thinking maybe it was shorting out, but I dont want to jump to that conclusion and tear it out if it is something else. Any ideas?:dunno:

That humming is likely coming from the engine bay. Do you still have your charcoal canister hooked up? There is a 1 way check valve, a gray cylinder that releases pressure every so often, I think when it gets too high inside the gas tank. The fumes are usually absorbed by the charcoal in the canister or burned by being introduced into the intake system but in my case, with no canister, it is vented to the atmosphere.

My ignition was completely off with the keys on my work bench. And that was a good idea The EE. I just checked it all and the canister is still there.
And cAPSlOCK97gst.. I have the stock pump which I havent rewired. I was planning to on replacing the pump and injectors this summer so I figured I might as well wait to mess with it.
I am stumped right now. I mean it doesnt seem like its doing harm to my car but seeming is one thing. I need to know for sure before I make an assumption like that.

my guess would be that the mpi relay was shorting and turning the fuel pump on
Doubtful, my car makes the same sound on occasion and I disconnect the battery every time I part the car for the night. Now power means no MPI which means no fuel pump being turned on. Since my car did it with the motor out of the engine bay and the only thing in there was the check valve and it was vibrating when the sound was being made, I am quite positive that is his problem.

I could be wrong.. it has not happened yet but it could :D

I still have not found the problem. But I am still looking. I had a lot of crap go wrong so most my focus went to that and the other projects piling up. Im about to just replace everything I can replace in the fuel system because I figure once I fix this something else will go out. Yay for owning a DSM:) lol
