I apologize in advance if there's a thread already about this, but I searched through multiple topics, online diagrams, and even my holy Chilton with no luck! I just bought a '90 TSI AWD manual trans a few weeks ago (my second DSM :D) and she had a real dirty engine bay. I thought it was a leaky valve cover but while checking all the fluids realized I'm missing a bolt/vent/sensor on top of the transmission. I now believe THIS to be the source of my oil mess but dont know what to replace it with to seal it properly. The bolt is directly above the fill/check bolt labeled "OIL" and can be seen below the stock recirculation hose. I have a 98 Spyder GS but the trans is a little different and it appears to have some kind of sensor in that area. If someone could take a peek at their 1G and let me know I would appreciate it. As you can see the hole in question has a big shiny bolt in it right now as a temporary fix. Thanks!

So this is for a 1G right? It seems your missing a VSS "vehicle speed sensor" or the Reverse Sensor. Does your MPH Gauge or Rear Reverse Lights work? That would be what I could think of.

By the size of the hole though I honestly think a bolt does go there, no luck with a Factory Service Manual?

How does the trans run?

Yup, that's your reverse switch. You could also check your local junkyard for one, or as Rook suggested, hit up the parts store.

2ndgen- Now that you mention it i dont think my reverse lights work... bahaha. I seriously am starting to beleive i wasted some $$$ on a Chilton, those diagrams are weak :(

Thanks a ton guys! I appreciate the help. Will update if needed.

Reverse switch - MD730979 - less than $20.00 new.
Reverse switch washer - MF660035 - less than $2.00 new.

Go buy new ones. You MUST run the proper washer underneath it, otherwise you will either damage the reverse switch, or you will have shifting issues into 5th/Reverse.

Good Catch Tim, Completely forgot about the washer there.

Did you get it fixed OP? Any problems?

http://stealth316.com/misc/dsm_tech_manual.pdf <--- here is a link to a free factory manual if you like one :). If you look around on his site you can find the extremely rare getrag manuals for our transmissions. I have a 3k too, so I use the snot outta his site and love it. If the link doesn't work, just go to stealth316.com and then click technical and go from there.

No I haven't fixed it yet, but I put a very shallow bolt in there and no problems since then.

Thanks for the price and part numbers, that will really help when I get around to fixing it! I'll be sure to get the proper washer.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll update this thread when I fix it.
