I had a problem a while back that set my car down, and I've been working to put it back together lately. One of the long term issues I have is a leaky fuel tank - anything past 3/4 tank and it leaks. That started a looong time ago with a weird POP! and an emissions control code, which happened once and never repeated itself. I have a feeling I managed to somehow overpressurize the tank due to a clogged vent or something and blow a fitting or split a seam..

Anyway, while the car is not running I've been wanting to pull the tank down. Problem is, I can't figure a way to do that without yanking the driveshaft, rear cradle, and all that mess.

Any suggestions on getting the tank out without having to get it up on a chassis lift and drop the driveline?

I just dropped my rear end back in today and i don't see how you would do a tank without pulling the rear subframe.. It's really not that bad to pull. To the original poster, have you check the gasket under the seat where the fuel pump is? Maybe it's blown out?

My driverside gas tank strap was so rusted that the metal the bolt is attached to rotted away and left me with a nice big chunk missing . Looks like I'll have some fun next winter dropping the rear end and gas tank :(.

Pulling the rear sub frame is actually pretty painless on a 2g.

When I do it I leave the knuckles, Rear arm (camber arm), and front arms attached to the sub frame and leave the upper arm and trailing arm attached to the car.

You will also have to pull the brakes off, both the calipers/rotors as well as the e-brake to disconnect the cable.

After that than remove the drive shaft, remember to mark it so when it goes back it it is timed right. Than it is pretty much ready to be dropped out. There are only 4 nuts holding it on. I use a jack under the diff and a helping friend to balance it.

The first time I pulled the rear sub frame it only took about an hour and a half working at a steady pace.

I have to replace only the vapor hose that runs along side the filler neck and i cant get to it easily, anyone got any tips to make this easier than dropping the whole fuel tank or rear subframe?

Yes the whole rear subframe assembly MUST be removed to drop the tank on a 2g. I just had to do this and have to do it again tomorrow. Its not too bad of a job. Good luck OP and Jordan.

Well I just wanna say that the sub frame doesn't even need to be touched when removing the tank... After dropping the exhaust and unbolting the drive shaft from the rear and unbolting the first carrier bearing the tank came RIGHT out with a problem...
