I bought the car ( a 1g 1990 esi )with a swapped tranny from a 92's because the original tranny lost 4th gear.

I went to the garage to get the grinding checked out, expecting to hear screwed up synchros. We already bled my clutch and refilled it, it didn't do much.

The mecanic said that according to him the tranny or clutch isn't a proper it to my model of car... Is there something i can do or will I really have to hunt down a 1990 tranny?...

Re: My new eagle nay have a serious tranny problem

Well the 90 has a 6 bolt crank and the 92 may have a 7 bolt crank. And there is a difference in the flywheels, and I think in the clutches. This may have been addressed already, but I would start there.

Re: My new eagle nay have a serious tranny problem

Just talked to the previous owner...

He confirms that he hasn't changed the shifter cables and shifter! Great news for me i think!

I'm not sure how much these parts would cost or if they're available new, any info on this? Would i be better off getting them used?

I'll need to know all the parts i will need to have my mecanic work them, so a detailed list would greatly help this mecanically troubled kid! ;)

I have a feeling i'll know alot about my car in no time thanks to you guys!

Oh, if you're not doing your own work on these cars, you'll go broke in no time. Shifter and cables can probably be had for under $100. Maybe someone nice on here who has a set will PM you since you don't have access to our classified section yet. 50 posts and 90 days are minimum requirements.

Re: My new eagle nay have a serious tranny problem

I'll try to find the parts. Though I'm no mechanic, I've got a good friend who loves nothing else, and i just met an older guy who saw my car and offered to work on it for me. He's already had a few tsi's and knows the car well. He only charged me the 2 cigarettes i gave him while he bled my clutch, really nice fellow. I'm sure he'd give me a good price for this job if I bring the parts.

Re: My new eagle nay have a serious tranny problem

So Red, what would you suggest I do to find out if your theory is absolutely the cause of my grinding gears ( before i head out to find parts)? Does the tranny need to be pulled to tell?

Re: My new eagle nay have a serious tranny problem

Can't really tell without the proper shifter cables. As long as your clutch isn't dragging or something else, you should be good to go with the cables. I just KNOW that the 90's and 91-94 are in fact a different set of cables and one doesn't work with the other.

Ok, i searched everywhere. These cables and shifter are unfindable in the used market.

Chrysler has new ones in stock, but they're 280$ for the cables and i don't know how much for the shifter because he found I was too vague.

Do i need the 'shifter arm' as he called it, or the 'shifting lever' that is under it? I think he called it a control arm or something?

And also, I want to be 100% SURE this is the source of my problem. I'm estimating the shifter will be around 100-200$, so if im about to pay $400+ in parts, i want them to fix my problem.

If I go see my mechanic, could he tell?

I've had both the 90 and 91-94 cables laying side by side. The only difference i saw was that the 90's, both cables where adjustable by the shifter base. One of the cables, not sure which year it was, was slightly longer. But nothing that couldn't be adjusted out. If you just switch out your entire 90 bracket that holds the cables to the tranny for the 91-94 bracket, the cables should work with some adjusting.

Ive talked about it a few mechanics and they cant seem to understand why this would be a logical solution.

What makes it so the original shifter/cables make the trann shift unsmoothly? Downshifts are usually very fine, but when upshifting ( particularily 1 to 2 ) i gotta go smooth at low rpm's or i hear a bad grinding sound, almost as if there were a saw down these sawing on the shifter.

Good news! Found a set of shifter cables and shifter base from a 92 awd turbo ( shouldnt be a problem if i have an ESI?), for 60$.

Thing is, i don't want to buy these parts if they're not the cure to my problem. My mechanic friend says it's impossible that those are the cause, and he'd be more willing to blame the clutch ( though the previous owner had a new one put in shortly before i bought it ).

My friend says if the cables/shifter would be the problem the gears would still go in but would just need more or less long of a path to get there ( depending if the cables are too short or too long ). He says they wouldn't grind at high rpm's for that.

The clutch does a faint hissing sound whenever pressed or depressed, but i never took it into account until my friend mentionned the clutch may have an issue?

Let me recapitulate my problem in more detail for some more theories:

Sometimes my gears wont go in fully ( feels like something is stopping them, when it happens i go to neutral, clutch again and it goes in with a bit more ease ). My 1st gear tends to do this when i'm stopped at a slight uphill, but double-clutching usually helps.

The worst is getting from first to second. I shift to 2nd at +/- 2500rpm because above that almost insures a horrible grinding sound. Even at low rpm's there is a chance of grind, but it is greatly reduced if i put her into 2nd very slowly ( which pisses people off behind me anytime i take a full stop ).

The shifter stick moves a little bit when put into gear ( rocks back and forth by very little when i press/depress gas, but this doesn't seem to cause any issues )

Let the suggestions roll :)
