The time has come for me to start my very own build thread. I have been building my talon for the past three years. I started with a 96 awd talon that didn't run and had bad paint but it had the potential to be great. Over the years I have done alot to get this car where it is now. I originally had a goal of 350 hp and came really close to hitting that mark. It put down 339awhp and 354 tq. Here is how it sits right now.

That's all I can really remember right now. I also have replaced nearly every bolt and sensor in the car. The car has been running issue free for the past 1 1/2 years. I have been collecting parts over that time to make more power. My plans were an HX35 and goal of 500 torque.

So I have a pile of parts and a wad of cash. I'm getting ready to put everything on and make some real power when a deal came along I couldn't pass up. I have always been on the lookout for a clean shell since mine has bad paint, ugly talon body pieces and is rotting from the bottem up. I get on the forums one day and see Gamble has his car for sale. I have loved his car fir some time now and it met all my requirements clean, awd, manual, 97+, and black. The fact that it came with a bunch of extras made it even better. I drove out there the following weekend and bought it. Here are a few pics of it. Sorry they are small but there the only ones I have of when I first got it.

Gamble really put his heart and soul into this car. Everything that was done was done right except the passenger seat bracket but there is a story behind that. The car came with duel walbro 255 fuel pumps, evo 8 seats, d2 coilovers, fuel lab fpr, cd player, alpine speakers, in dash screen, reverse camera, a bunch of gauges and the fuse box relocated to the glovebox to name a few. I plan on picking up right where he left off but first it needs a transplant.

Let's get started. I took both cars over to my buddies garage which is now my garage since he can't afford rent.

I found a better picture of the empty engine bay.

Image

First thing I did was strip the interior so I could figure out how this car was wired. I also wanted to clean the carpet since it was in bad shape. I also plan on switching my gauges over since I didn't get any of the engine sensors for the current gauges in the car. Plus I like my mechanical gauges better that electronic. I feel they are more accurate and less prone to failure.

Image

Next after a good scrubbing I dropped the engine in with some new poly mounts. I would like to have black ones but I already ordered them before I got this shell.

Image

It isn't going to look as pretty as it once was at first, but once it is up and running I will work on the appearance of the engine bay. Powder coated valve cover is definatly in the future.

Good reading! I can't wait to see this build!
Thanks I can't wait to get it done. These past few weeks of having no boost really have sucked. My tired Chevy silverado with 320,000 miles just don't do it for me. Also Shane you have a pm.

I have had these sitting in my basement for 2 years now and was just dying to put them on.

But the center tail light is cracked and I just can't have that. So when I took my spoiler to my buddies to get painted I also dropped off the stock center tail light. Herr is how it turned out.

After 2 trips to the car wash and taking my grandmas steam cleaner to the carpet I realized the stains were there to stay. I called around to find some new carpet but of course it has been discontinued. I started researching my options and came across a thread about RIT dye. It sounded like my best option so I headed down the the grocery store and picked some up. I ended up buying 8 boxes of black cause I didn't want Amy grey to show through. Mixed it all up and let it sit in a tub while me and the g/f went to the movies and dinner. When we got back about 6 hours later I pulled it out and hung it to dry. This is how it turned out.

Image

After I swapped in my b&m shifter and new shifter cables I put the rest of the interior back together. It needs detailed but I like the way it looks with the black carpet.

My evo3 manifold and 1g n/t TB sitting next to my 2g manifold. The Tb is from throttlebodies.com and is ported out to 63 mm. It also has a blow tough FIAV block off plate installed. The manifold I searched for for months and finally found someone in europe who had one. I dropped it off at the machine shop to get cleaned since it was very dirty when I got it. I think it turned out very nice. I decided to go with the evo3 instead of a SMIM because I wanted more top end but I didnt want to sacrifice any low end torque. This is going to be a mostly street drivin car after all.

I also picked up a magnus heat barrier intake gasket. I have read mixed reviews on these but I figured I would give it a try. Worst case I have to replace it.

Intake manifold and TB installed with the hard to find evo3 coil bracket I picked up also.

AEM fuel rrail with 850 FIC injectors. I will need to upgade the injectors later for the HX35 but for now with the evo3 they will be more than enough.

Ive got the engine 95% plugged in right now and you cant see very many wires. Gamble did the hard work of relocating the fuse box. I only had to make a few wires longer to get everything hidden and out of the way. The only thing left to hook up is the CAS. I am going to do away with the 95-96 style CAS in favor of a 1g black top. I originally planned on running the 97-99 CAS but my HKS cams are not drilled and tapped for it.

So you ended up not using any stri gauges or timer? Feel free to send them back :D
Those things are awesome. What was wrong with the shift cables?
Nothing was wrong with the shift cables. I just had brand new ones in my doner car. As for the gauges no I didnt end up using them mainly because I wanted mechanical gauges. I did like the way the looked alot more but I am giving them to my buddy along with a few other things I had doubles of. In return he is buying me a CF hood. As for the turbo timer I may end up putting it back in intead of the apexi one I have.

I finally got my fuel line and 6 a/n fittings in.

Image

I forgot how much I hate putting this shit together it is just a major PITA. I had to relocate the fpr and inline wally because my intake manifold and throttlebody were too close to them. Here is how it turned out.

I ordered way too much fuel line. I probably have about 3+ feet left over. I guess it will just go in the stock pile of extra parts for now. My girlfriend was also telling me how much she likes the purple. So now I'm kinda torn between my original plan of a blue color scheme or sticking with purple to match the coilovers and fpr.

I'm thinking about it. I just already have my fuel rail, BOV and WG all in blue. Im not sure if the aem fuel rail is even offered in purple and the WG and BOV I have had so long I doubt they would exchange them even though they are BNIB still.

I drilled and tapped my cam in the car. I put them in and forgot about that. I didn't feel like taking them out. I didn't have any problems doing it I just used a drill and kept it as straight as I could. It's sealed so no shavings will get in the head. I used a vacuum to get all the shavings from around it. Took me about 20 minutes to do. Just a thought.

I got my evo 3 oil filter housing and my oil cooler put on last night. No more coolant lines running to my oil filter!!! Of course before I put the oil filter housing on I had to do a quick port job on the oil relief hole. I have seen them opened up more than this but I was starting to get nervous about porting and further.

I had to trim my brand new splash guards for the cooler lines but it wasn't much. I can't wait to see how much this helps oil temps. I have been told this is one of the best mods you can do to our cars.

I also got my slim fans mounted.

I decided to go with 2 1200 cfm pushers to clean up the engine bay. I know they aren't as efficient as pullers but we will see how they work out. When the engine was in my other car I didn't have any issues with over heating and I was only running one fan. Plus this will leave more room for the eventual hx-35 install.

Yeah I thought about tapping them in the car but I am just too paranoid about ruining my engine. I have already blown one 4g63 up in the past and I don't want it to happen to another.

A few pictures of my custom apexi DP before I move on to the good updates. This was made by AMS when My car was furst in the since the Apexi didnt bolt up to my evo3 o2 housing. They made it the right angle for the o2 housing and also made it a full 3" DP instead of the 2.5-3 like the come. They charged me more than what I paid for the DP originally to do it but they do good work.

My new ETS intercooler. This is the 3" core that they said would be perfect for my HX-35.

Image

New ETS next to my old SBR intercooler that has sprung a leak.

Image

Image

They are both very close in size. The ETS is a few inches longer and there is a difference in the end tank design.

Since the ETS only has tabs on the top to mount it to the car I had some tabs welded on the end tanks to hold it more secure. I dont know what ETS is thinking as far as the way they want you to mount it with just the tabs they weld on for you.
