sure it can be done, i saw a pic here b4 of some ghetto looking ride that had a fade from like maroon to green or somethin like that. Anyone look at those $20.00 ones that are 12 volt, I heard those were supposed to be bright as shit, maybe 2 could be used to light the whole gauge assembly.....maybe.

I assume the 194 size bulbs are wedge type things that will plug into the socket of a gauge or whatever. Correct me if Im wrong. How would it be possible to connect a led light to the socket of an Autometer gauge for example? I have a feeling an led light would look much better in there than a plasma blue bulb.

you just use ohm's law then use a resistor and led and solder the resistor into the led, then into somethin like ur parking light wire, that's all there is to it. I have a friend with a GTI that did it blue and red and it looks SWEET, sorry don't have pics, forgot where i put it.

yeah youre right. basically you need to measure voltage and current going to bulb, and use that in conjunction with ohms law (V=IR) and find your resistance. And voila! solder on to led and solder to board!
Albert <--- doing this right now!

Well for some odd reason my digi cam WILL NOT WORK at all in this situation. The light isn't bright enough for it to pick up and if I flash that ruins the whole "night shot" idea. Just trust me that it looks much better and that the needles are easily distinguishable from the backing and well lighted. Good luck to all the LED guys, let me know how that goes.

i have the SAME EXACT problem when trying to take pictures of the gauges I'm trying to sell to people, the ones that I made. The camera will either have flahs and defeats the purpose or it will just be like pitch black.

Night Shots

Use a Tri-Pod.

The camera eye will need to open for a longer period of time. If you have the camera in hand it will be blurry from the movement. The shot will take at lest 1 second or more. With in that time your hand will move at least a little.

Turn auto flash off on the camera.

Position the shot.

Set the shot for Auto Shoot. That way when you press the button you don't bump the Tri-Pod or camera.

Bet it works.

I got a question.. I like the normal red needles on the 98 DSM with the black face plate.. But at night they light up orange??? I went in looking for a bulb that had an orange light condom. There isn't one. I think that the orange is pick up from the orange faced gauges them selves. I pulled the bulbs out and try turning it on the back light.. It looks to me that I am right in say this... Do you guys know anything about this.. And how can I get my needles to light up red without changing my factory orange backlight?? When I get white or silver gauges, and choose a blue or purple to try and simulate the VW Bugs black light what will happen to the needles color?? Thank you very much. :)

first of all if you can't get to the gauges just by common sense, then I don't think you're up for this project, getting to the gauges is like prolly 1/20 of doing this. Second of all the stock lights in there are bulbs not leds, so you'd have to do a swap. As for your question lower the steering wheel, take the 2 screws outta the top of the plastic surroundings, unclip that shit, unscrew 4 screws in the corners deeper in the dash, then just pull that shit out.

haha it's cool, for most parts of the dash/doors/console you can just get off using common sense, that's what i did.
TIP: when you remove shite and there's screws you can't see, only put 1/2 of them back on, will still stay fine and take 1/2 the time to remove again, lol.
