I will soon be looking for a 1G and was wondering what are the common spots to look for rust. I might be looking at getting a 2G as well(with the 6 bolt swap), so rust spots on those would help as well. How do the DSM bodies hold up in the Northeast or those near the ocean with that salty air?

I've seen quite a few 1g's with rust on the front fender in front of the tire... a few inches from the edge of the wheel well, just above the bumper. Also open the doors and look at the spot where the pin-switches are for the doors... I've seen quite a few cars rot out in this spot, mine being one of them.:( Also look along the top of the windshield where the seal meets the roof of the car. Mine rotted there once too. Had that fixed when I got it painted and its coming back again.:( hope this helps.

That helps me out a lot Josh. I had the same problem with rust above my windshield on my SHO. It cost me $300 to get it cleaned up with a new piece of metal in there along with the whole painting of the roof. You can't even tell it was painted because it matches so perfectly. Now, all I need is someone to give me some hints about the 2G. I know they are a lot younger but there must be some good spots to look out for.

2G Rust

My 95 GS-T is rusting where the back window meets the deck lid. Not an easy fix because the rear window has to be removed to repair the rust. I live in Florida, and first noticed that the white paint had orange streaks. Now it is bubbles.

my 1g (1990) has major rust right where the windshield meets the roof. if it has that problem then get it fixed right away.

I have to put the visors all thee way forward when it rains to catch the water, it leaks... not bad but it does suck.

I have some horrid rust inside the doors, by the door sensors.... Anybody ever fixed it? Also, on the rear wheels, at the top and front of the fenders i have some holes/rust... those can be fixed farily easy i think.. but the door one really worries me.

Hey AirZoom, if the rust inside your doors has gone so far as to rot all the way through, the only GOOD way to repair it would be to rebuild that section with sheet metal and have the door jams repainted. If it is just surface rust, go nuts on it with a DA sander after removing the pin switches and repaint that area. I would suggest doing quite a few coats of paint and clear coat to keep it from doing this again, oh and make sure to get rid of all the rust, or it will just rot from the inside out. My car will be going through this next year, as the body around the pin switches is starting to rust. I need to get rid of it before it rots all the way through.

Yea, sadly mines rotted really bad. The paint is all gone, and bubbled off.. The passanger side aint to bad.. but the driver side is pretty horrid, theres acctually a little tiny hole on that side, and the door sensor fell inside... Would it be hard putting new metal there? Since its all curved etc? You'd have to curve it all nicely? How much would a shop charge for it?

Well considering its a small area I'd say probably a couple hundred bucks at least. I know a guy here that does metal fabrication and he does a real good job, but I don't think its cheap. Look around in your area for a good body shop to do it and get an estimate from them. You might be able to away with having just those two small areas rebuilt and repainted for a few hundred. I would not suggest doing it yourself, unless you are good with metal fabrication and have access to all the tools you would need to do it. Shop around and see what you find.

This is good info! A good product to use when painting and trying to get all of the rust sanded down is POR-15 (or something like that). POR stands for paint over rust and it converts the little rust that you weren't able to sand down into a usable area to paint and prevents rust from returning.

Just to add to the mix. My 2g has minor rust on the frame of the movable part of the sunroof and really odd -- on the driver's strut tower. Here in MN a rust is a bigtime concern but it's not really a big deal unless it's made the sheet metal really thin or gone all the way through.

I would think the rear hatch where the glass meets the metal, mine has little spots on the door on the outside near the rubber piece on the top, and some of the lines in front. Also the battery, but that's a givin'

I have a little bubbling on my 1g on the very front corner at the very tip on my front left side quarter panel but when i get the front bumper repainted I'll just have them sand that part down and re paint it they'll do it for free since I'm getting the bumper done.
