i'm looking to buy some new wheels for autoX use. i want to get the smallest diameter wheel for a couple of reasons, but just don't know whats the smallest size that will fit. oh, also, whats the widest size tire that will fit without rubbiing? 235?
thanks

13" wire wheels??

if you gonna do autox then you gonna need big brakes to stop you in time, and if you have big brakes your gonna need a big wheel to hold them, id say 17" wheels would be the min.

or you could use the standard brakes, but youd still need like 15" wheels absolute minimum.

if anyone knows differently, by all means help this guy out.

Even though smaller wheels give you an advantage in acceleration I would opt not to use them for a few reasons. First is the brake clearance issue, you will eventually want bigger brakes meaning 17 inchers are the only way to go. Also to maintain correct sizing your tires would have increasingly larger sidewalls as you decreased rim size. This is bad because tires flex which does not help grip or handling which are more important in auto cross setting. One way to get around the weight of larger wheels is to buy forged rims. Forged rims cost more however they weigh significantly less than cast wheels. In the end the benefits of forged rims outweigh the costs for both drag racing and auto cross.

If you are running the stock 2G Big Brakes, you can't use anything smaller than a 16" rim. If you want to swap to a smaller rim, then you will need to replace the front brake calipers.

For autocross use, smaller isn't necessarily better. Its more about gearing than size. I run 16 x 8 16lb rims with 245/45/16 V700 race tires. The rims have a +32 offset. The offset of the rims have a huge impact on the size tire you can run. Dennis grant runs 275/40/17 tires on 17 x 10 rims with a +12 offset.

I'm running on 15" x 7" Kosei's 45 offset with 205/50 Toyo RA1's and the 2G brake "upgrade" on my 1g with no problems so 15's are possible.
I'm running the rubber that came on the wheels when I bought them used and the grearing is awesome (7% change).
The tyres are too small for the car weight/grip but I haven't gotten around to changing them yet.
I'm actually going to swap with a Honda guy for his 15"x7" Kosei's with 38 offset and probably run 225/50 Victoracers.

Again, this all depends on what the courses you run on like. If there are many low speed turns where you're borderline 1st/2nd I would go with a smaller overall diameter to stay in 2nd and eliminate a shift (and opportunity for mistake).

I also appreciate any comments.
I'm debating what to do for next year as I might also run some Solo1 events.
Does anybody know what the widest I could go with the 15x7 38 offset?

Thanks.
