well if your like me and have gotten your DSM recently you probly noticed that our N/A cars are just a bit slower then the turbo big bros's! And on top of that most people who got the Non-Turbo those long 10 or so years ago just gave it a oil change here and there and thats it! in ten years some were plain out abused and cheaply added mods could make some of our cars plain out nasty now days!

when i got my Laser RS 2.0 Non-Turbo for a cheap $700 it had sat for over 7 months without any care. It needed some love. But with most of the major things repaired the car still felt sluggish. so after saving some money and finally getting a sunday off of work it was time for a massive tune up and with the help of the online DSM world, to get her to use all 135 ponies as best she could :)

And i have to say, IT TURNED OUT WONDERFUL!

I got a K&N drop in filter and cleaned out the intake path. I removed the TB and Intake manifold and gave them a good cleaning with a can of MCCC and carb cleaner (make sure you do not @#$! any of your sensors up, check the fourms out)

New gaskets all around.

I did the MCCC PVC trick and then let it sit over night (from sat evening to sunday morning. I vaccumed it out and then put in old plugs and it started right up! smoke went everywhere. i replaced the wires and plugs (with NGK and Magnacore wires).

I didn't trust the NGK stock gap (it was gapped for a turbo!) so i re-gaped it). this was a MASSIVE imporvment.

I replaced the ISC (idle controlling motor). and the TPS (throttle postion sensor) and throttle switch. Now i idle solid and get much more response from the pedle.

The O2 sensor was also replaced.

Heres a surprise. i replaced the hacked MAS and aircan with a stock setup (minus the silencer) and not only did it imporve my vibration problem when at idle but i could feel much better response in the low end. and looking at the non-turbo can i could see why we really dont need to hack it ... it has a RamAir horn and a cold air intake from under the car. how can hot engine air beat that. i do plan on improving the RamAir effect and see what happens.

I replaced the battery with a high preformance one too (not that it could really do anything, but i wanted to mention EVEYTHING I DID)

After the MCCC i changed the oil with valvoline synthitic and a mitsu filter (i was going off advice it might rid me of the tick)

IN THE END ::: I can't tell you what all this did for my car! ITS FAST AS HELL NOW. it this wasn't all the expensive. The ISC TPS and switch were all off a junk car at a local yard (i got a few and found the ones that worked) and the rest in cheap tune up stuff (except the $40 K&N and $70 Wires)

when i hit the gas, IT REALLY TAKES OFF. not a turbo, thats for sure, but i think that alot of the power the car lost over the years came back.

mid-range is extreamly powerful, and high way speeds have improved so much i can't believe im in my Laser!

Hesiation is gone. stalling has been reduced to only which i switch into drive (its a Auto) and only once so far (it tryed to run but the RPM just dipped to low!). i think i just have to readjust the BISS (i messed with it before i replaced the ISC and such so it maybe off) i will do that soon.

So for anyone with a sluggish Non Turbo with many miles and just as many years  TRY THIS! It cant hurt thats for sure! and the MCCC it just the right. JUST make sure to get it all out!

I love my car once more! :D and i'm having so much fun spriting down the local parkway it was more then worth the time and small amount of money. i will get my compression (spec is 190) and leave it here.

any comments?

PS Don't flame me for being happy and sharing my results.

MAN i want an EVO ----- but im going for
a turbo DSM first ------------------------------------

that cold air intake you found actually is a big black box with no entrance or exit. its more of a resonator or something i don't really know what the hell good it does, but air sures as hell doesn't com in there unless you cut the front off of it.

OH...

yes i love to go from 80 HP to all beasty 135 HP LOL ... so the secound tube is nothing .. maybe ill cut the plastic below (i heard someone do this .. but i was just thinking they did it to gget more air ... well thanks for sheding some light on that ... i do wish us NT people had more intake options?!

thanks for the replies guys

Ticking

No the ticking didn't go away with the filter, but i read on DSM.org that the Mitsu Diamond filter kept more oil in the head longer allowing the lifters to clean out or something. it didnt work. However i noticed after i put MCCC in my PVC line it was reduced. after using some synthtic oil (or maybe it was just cause i changed the oil after using MCCC in the chambers) but that also reduced my ticking. i have only a small tick you can not notice with the hood shut (to think about it i dont hardly notice it with it open :) and people who dont know about it wont notice it at all.

MCCC stands for Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner. you can get it at any local DSM dealer (SaTaN). look on DSM.org or these forums for more info and part number. Also look around here (and VFAQ.com on how to use it. Most people report engine improvments, alot saying it restores alot of life and power. Idle surge and many problems some times just go away! i alone didnt slove all my problems but it was worth every pennie and then a whole lot more!

If you got some miles on your car research it and try a super tune up like this.

I plan on turning that shitty resonator into a RamAir idea i read on the fourm.

look at that and leave me some feedback guys ! :p :p :p

NIce job you mechanic you! I think I'll try some of the MCCC out for myself. Is it like the BG stuff thats $25 a can? I'm also very stocked with my N/A after getting the timing belt done. After driving for nearly 1yr w/ sputters I solved that problem also. Bought new NGK's and installed them and my sputters went away and the car is running awesome. I had replaced the plugs orignally but I think I fowled one. I did everything for the sputters (Wires, O2, BG,etc) and each one helped but never got rid of the sputters. It was only bad on launch where I would have to really give it alot of gas to prevent sputters. I'm going to do a similar RAM_AIR (nice walkthrough BTW) but I'm going to just route some dryer hose up from the fog light area to a hole (snorkel) on the airbox so I won't have to worry to much about debries/rain. I'm thinking that will give me a few extras HP's. Nice to see us N/A'er getting busy. I'm happy as hell with my ride right now... Enjoy.

Hydrolock

You could hydrolock the engine ... vary vary bad. pump it out, crank it out, vaccum it out, just get as much as you can out. alittle wont hurt ... it will just take upto 5 mins. to start the car, but i just taped 2 drinking straws to my house vaccume and sucked it all out (i cracked the engine over once to just eject what i could). my car started with just a few seconds and smoke went everywhere for about 5 mins. after that it ran much much better and my idle went to somewaht normal and smoother. helped alot. with my 140,000+ mile engine (i think the last owner got this on droped in about a year before he sold it to me, so it may not have had that much on it. still worth the effort.

Cutting the front off that big resonator in the wheel well lets a lot of cool air flow to your intake. I just used a small handsaw and it only took a few minutes.

I've been running with a completely open K&N for about a year and half. Never had a problem with debris or rain. There is a slight power increase, not mention audible increase. But they're durable and as long as you clean them they really will last "A Million Miles". Besides the stock airbox leads to the foglight opening. What good would a hose do? Also after my recent major tune-up everything felt great. I did the basics: changed oil, platinum +4 plugs, all belts, cleaned air filter, new Bosch oil filter, all other fluids were fine. I also changed the alternator and engine mounts. If you've got a rough idle, it may not be the ISC or BISS at all. One of your engine/tranny mounts could be worn. There are four and it only takes one to go bad to screw up your idle, among other things. My current problem is a rough ride on my brand new OEM struts and springs and wheel vibration at high speeds. It's been p!ssing me off so much I swear I will solve these problems this week. Thanks.

Also be careful what you cut off or remove. When do this you may be leaving something open that you shouldn't. As the wheel well goes I've learned that those parts being cut or removed may loosen that side of your front bumper. And that can vibrate at high speeds and you will feel it. And if you cut the airbox make sure your MAS and filter are still strongly secured. Or you just might lose them over time.

Thanks for the concern but shes all secure I just opened up the airbox in the front is all. That way air can get rammed in, and that box isnt just sitting there.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be a smart@ss. Just that I've done similar work and it's always the smallest simplist things that I miss. Anyway if it works for ya, Great.

yeah

the ram air link i posted above is risky. i was really going to do it but im just going to cut the resnator off and seal off the venting of the pastic protector thing in the front of the wheel well. it rains alot here in washington DC and there is alot of water on the roads when it does, so its just too much risk for a pony or two. i have got my hands on the ducting used to help get air across the side mount intercooler in turbo cars and i have added that to get air to where the resanator use to be. i have not hacked my aircan because of the fact the engine bay gets soo hot, but im tempted :D i am going to add a larger 3" tube from the air can to where the resanator was to pick up cool air, in the area where the stock snorkal is, so it gets air only from the outside.

any comments

and dont get testy with one another, us NT guys have to stick together! any work on an NT is good, and im glad people still love them, and we treat them well :p

peace will
