Ok, heres what happened. I raced this 98 Cobra Mustang with MT slicks and he kills me off the line but by the time I get traction I pull on him like mad only I didn't pass him by the time the race was over. I get pissed that this Slobra beat me because it was obvious the only reason he did was his damn MT's. I ask if he wants to race again and he says yes. I am flamed right now and do a burn out to heat the tires up so I might have a some chance of traction. Heres where the tranny goes BOOM! I rev it up and drop the clutch and it spins to about 7300 RPM(OOPS!)and shift into second and I here a loud pop under my hood. I thought the engine went boom, but it ran fine. Then I shift into second and it grinds like hell, third same thing. I drive it home and the grinding in third goes away pretty quickly but the second gear grinding doesn't. I am pretty sure I blew a synchro or something. If there are any other ideas please tell me. I guess its time for a rebuild. I have a couple of questions. I would like to build it to handle a lot of power as I plan on adding a bigger turbo later on. I plan on taking the tranny out myself and taking it somewhere to be rebuilt. About how much should this cost?? Would it be cheaper to buy a rebuilt one?? What should I have done to make the tranny stronger?? Also, does anyone know of any good places to have this done within a 100 mile or so radius of Atlanta, GA?? Good performance shops perhaps. How much would it cost to ship it to someone like Buschar and have him to a rebuild?? I would really appreciate any ideas on what to do. Since I am taking the tranny out any way, I plan on putting in a RAM clutch. Has anyone had any experience with this clutch, please share. Money is very very tight but want the best for my baby. Help me out guys!!

I just replaced the tranny in my gst a couple of months ago. It started out a 1 1/2 - 2 years ago with it just grinding going into second. That progressively got worse, until finally when I put it into second and released the clutch it just popped out of gear. I drove it like that just going from 1st to 3rd for over a year, the only reason I did anything is because the clutch finally went out. Crazy I know, but I couldn't afford to do anything else. Here's why: I took my car to a well-respected national tranny repair chain, they wanted $250 just to drop it and diagnose the problem. After, that they were talking about synchros being shot, 2nd gear ate up, and the rest of it not being pretty either. Bottom line... $1900. No way! I still ended up paying $700 just to have the clutch replaced so it was driveable. 2wks later, 5th shot out the side of the tranny because SOMEONE failed to torque down some retainer nut or something. Finally I went to a salvage yard, they got on a national database and found a tranny from a '96 talon. $650 for tranny and shipping, $250 for a local shop to install it (would've done it myself but I was on deployment) and I was back in business full swing.

Kevingst, what year is your car??
just asking, because i have a 90 awd with the same problem as 91LaserT and i was wondering if i should try to find a 2G tranny or just a late 1G...so like 91LaserT is asking, is it cheaper to buy:1--a rebuilt stock tranny, 2--buy a used 2g or 1g tranny from somewhere like a salvage yard (mitsu replaced the bad syncros in like late 91 right??), or have someplace rebuild the broken tranny with beefer parts??

thanks guys

who am i goin to race now?!
man that really sucks that u blew your synhros, if i stayed i would have wasted that damn cobra for u! i finally adjusted my rev limiter so i dont hit that son of a bitch anymore :) Hope u get a new trans soon, so we can race some more :)

thanks for the help, about how much should this cost though? I don't think mine is busted too bad.

Hey supa...nice z28....14.1@99 that is pretty good.
I'd give you a race if you where in GA. Oh well and 91 i hope you get your tranny fixed. Also don't worry about the Mustang...you know you could beat it if you had slicks. so it really doesn't matter. If you want i'll come back and run him off the road. i know my car is faster. LOL

95+ tranny's will not bolt up to 1g's without mods. The better synchro's were used only in 94. I have a tranny waiting to be rebuilt. I am going to use a GVR4 1st if it needs one (slightly taller) and it is getting the 2nd gear from TRE with double synchro's. Also getting a new hub & slider and all new synchros. John said cost would be around $400 for parts.
