I'm posting before I search because I kind of doubt this has happened to many people. Here's the deal:

I did the rear carrier bearing fix to repair the "thump-thump-thump" noise on my 90 Eclipse GSX. The instructions that I got off of VFAQ were excellent and the repair went exactly as it should have.

The problem is that upon removing the bolts that hold up the carrier bearing bracket, I discovered that the bolt that holds up the driver's side of the bracket was rusted. I used just a slight bit of torque to remove the nut from the bolt and it just slid right off. Actually it more like FELL off. The only thing that was holding that nut to the bolt was rust. The bolt itself was smooth and the inside of the nut was stripped almost completely clean. This appeared to be the result of a botched try at this fix from days before I owned the car.

The bolt I refer to is coming from the floorpan. I haven't had the time to check this yet, but I was wanting to ask if anyone knew if that bolt was removable from the other side of the floorpan (inside the car) or if it was actually welded to the body. I would like to know if anyone is familiar with this, because if I can replace the bolt, I will be doing it asap. If not, I have to find out how to make that bolt work again (tap and die?).

Right now that side of the carrier bearing bracket is being held in place by heavy duty zip ties, so a quick response by an educated individual would be greatly appreciated.

On the good note, the thumping problem is fixed. :)

Thanks

I didn't un bolt mine, but I went out and looked at my car (it's on jackstands with no interior right now). Near as I can tell that is a stud that is welded to the body. I think you will have to take it to a body shop.

carrier bearing fix a trade for other vibes?

I did the carrier bearing rebuild. It fixed the thump under acceleration but now I get a pretty bad vibration from 35-45mph. The u-joints in my driveshaft are in excellent shape so I now thats not the cause. I think that filling the bearings with silicone is like replacing regular rubber engine mounts with the hard poly ones thus losing the vibration absorbing properties of the hollow rubber. I had no vibration problems before the carrier bearing mod, so I guess I'll just have to replace the bearings with new @ $60 ea. I think I would have rather had the thump when racing for now. What a pain in the ass.

See, and people wonder why I like fwd LOL.

I fixed the carrier bearing on my friends '90 awd. Everything worked great. No thumping upon acceleration, and no funny vibrations at any speed.

I would try to tap that striped out stud with an amercian style thread because they are cheaper to buy. If that doesen't work, just have a muffler shop weld you a new stud on. I'd sand down the weld and primer and paint the surface though. Thats kind a bad are for rust.
