Hey everyone, I was just wonder if someone can help me with the situation with my car. Well in the past week my car has taken a shit. I car is so slow that little old honda's can beat me. When I get in my car and go, boost builds up and holds but it doesn't feel like I am moving any faster. I am guessing that I have something blown but I am not sure. I do notice that I am getting some black smoke coming out of my exhaust which means that I am running rich. I have a cracked exhaust manifold but I dont know if that is the main thing that is causing the problem. I have changed my spark plugs and that didn't help any. I also noticed that my lifter tick is now back. I do have a OEM oil filter on it and I am using Mobil 1 15W50. Do you guys think that my ECU is detecting to much tapping and is retarding my timing? I am getting my brother AFC to lean things down to see if that helps but I would like everyones recommedations on what is going on with my car.

Thanks in advanced.

Just to give a example on how bad it's slowing down my car. My car use to be able to pull 14-15 seconds G-Tech and rev speed meters 1/4 mile runs. Now I am running 18's in the 1/4.

I know, I know, that some fucked up times. *holds head down low in shame :( *

Wow, your car is really slow, even for when it was running right. My car with only a K&N could run high 14's. Anyway, it's hard to say what's making your car run like a turd. If it's too rich, that could be part of the problem. But 18 seconds for 1/4 sounds like something more than just that. This is very limited info you've given us. Yes knock can definitely screw up your timing and make the car pretty slow. You should datalog and check the timing curve. There's lots of other things too, hard to tell with your description.

I don't have a datalogger so I can't do that. Hopefully I will be getting my pocketlogger cable and software some time this month to see what is going on with my car. What other information do you need to better help me out. I'm pretty bummed out that my car is running like shit.

Well, how is the car idling? You're not venting to the atmosphere or anything wierd like that are you? Possibly you have a very bad boost leak and the computer is running as rich as possible trying to compensate.

the car idles fine.. around 700-800. but very stable. I am running a 1G BOV vented back into the intake. I tried to run a leak test the other night and I didn't notice any leaks. I will test for leaks again. Sometimes it feels like I don't have enough spark but I just changed my plugs and the old ones were fine and the wires were replaced about 6 months ago.

Hmm...Check your timing, replace the distributor cap and rotor, and make sure your plug gap is correct. A manifold leak will definately cause some serious powerloss. How much boost were you running before? How much is it now that you've noticed the problem? Good luck.

I have had the crack manifold for aleast a couple of months and it really didn't affect the performance of my car until now. I have replaced the spark plugs already, timing belt has been change in the past month. I think it has too do with lifter tick because when it's nice and cool outside and my car is cool, I hit full boost without a problem and the power is at the norm, but when it's hot as fuck outside and I can hear the lifter tick, it runs like shit. I think I am going to go with Royal Purple at the next oil change and another OEM filter to see if that helps it. Please keep the suggestions coming in.

Thanks,
-Huy

Man i have the same problem....

Well I have good news everyone. I got the AFC on tonight and things are running pretty good. I leaned it out a shit load and it pulls hard again. It's kinda strange because I have had the same stuff on my car and it worked fine until a couple of day ago. I guess my FPR was overflowing with my Walbro. I'm now boost happy again, but I still need to get a new exhaust manifold.

10w50 engine oil? Isn't that just a little to heavy for that engine? Maybe that's what is giving you that lag. Switch to a lighter oil. I'm using redline 10w40 because mine is over 100k miles & it runs great!

Saber!...!...!

Well I live in Texas and it's hot as hell around here. Turbo motors don't help either with the excessive heat that it give out, that is why I use 15W50 in my car. Whenever I put anything else in it in the summer time, the car runs like shit because the oil get too watery(sp?). From what I heard, 15w50 is good for the car.

Car Not pulling under full boost

It might be a fuel pressure issue. If you have an air-fuel ratio gauge, does it go suddenly leaner when you floor it under boost? Mine was. Turned out my fuel pump (Walbro) was failing. After replacing it everything went back to normal. See if the car behaves normally if you turn the boost down 3-5psi. If so it's a good chance your pump or fuel filter may be bad/clogged.

Doh! Missed your post where you'd fixed the problem. I'm going to leave this info here though as it might be helpful for someone else.

Everytime I would floor it, my A/F read that it was running rich most of the time. I could tell that it was running rich because of the black smoke that was coming out of my tail pipe. Now with it leaned out, I don't see the black smoke anymore. Now I just need to buy a EGT probe so that I can tune the car some more.
