Does a bad cat, mean I won't pass smog? I had mechanic tell that my 1G would not pass smog because of this and that I should replace it too.

Hey, does adding alcohol to your gas really work? I heard your supposed to go in on a rainy day.

higher octane affect results?

Hey guys, I have to go in soon too. I should pass with flying colors, but I was wondering if I used a higher octane (eg. 100) if that would affect anything? Sorry if this is a stupid question... I just got to thinking (I know... dangerous :p )

Cheers.

I would suggest using what you use all the time. Probely some 92 octane right. The motor was designed to use it and unless you have a detonation problem than you should not need the higher octane.

Sorry, I don't think about that sort of stuff I'm from Kansas where it's sunny one minute, rains the next, then a tornado takes your house away.

None of these "add alcohol to gas" or other miracle home remedies will make your car pass the California emmisions test. If your car is running properly with a good O2 sensor and good Cat you should pass easily. My 92 with almost 300K was going to be a gross polluter at last test but put a new O2 sensor in it with a new cat ($90 installed) and passed by a wide margin. It's the NOx that goes off the scale when your Cat is bad.

Actually I don't have a cat and i passed Pennsylvania emissions testing. Of course, they didn't know that i don't have the cat in there, but hey... it just barely passed, but passing is passing, right?

It would never fly here....Smog laws are very stringent in Cali. They even use a dyno now instead of just a sniff test...fortunately AWD cars still are sniffed. But This state allows very little emmisions beyond when the vehicle is new
