I have a set of H&R springs that lower the car a tastefull 1" matched with KYB AGX Adjustibles that give a nice increase in handleing over the stock setup.
You could further and get what my roomate has on his 93 AWD which is Ground Control Coilovers with Koni Adjustibles.
His car is very nicely setup.
You may also want to look into a front strut tower bar to clean up the front end.
Dont get fancy with it as they all do the same job.
Not much rubber can be placed on the stock 6" rims but if you are looking to upgrade look into at least a 7" wide wheel.
My roomate went to 17x8's with 235 width Kumho Supra 712's and really likes them for the price.

Upgrade the sway bars. The factory units are way too weak.

Hmm..

I havent done this yet.
Did you replace both the front and rear Sways?
Did you notice a large difference in body roll?
What brand?

There's some debate on whether to replace the front sway bar on a 1G AWD. Some say the front is already large enough, and a bigger bar upsets the balance of the car. As for the rear sway bar, you have your choice of RM Racing or Suspension Techniques. I'm partial to the RM's but I have a 2G.

As for springs, you have to make this choice - how much ride quality are you willing to sacrifice? If you live in an area with rough roads, Ground Controls, even with Koni's, will jar you to death.

I have Koni's and Ground Controls (see my sig) and the roads are pretty good here (NC) and it's still stiff. The Eclipse is my fun car, so I don't have to drive it every day. I'm willing to sacrifice the ride for a good auto-x machine.
