Ive had this problem since Ive owned the car, but never thought anything of it. Everytime I put the car in reverse or the car goes backwards, and apply the brakes on put up the e-brake, the car makes this deep whining noise. It comes from the back and its pretty loud too, and its the type of noise that youre like wtf is wrong with ur car dude! Do u think it has something to do with the rear differential locking up? My tires dont skid or nuthin when it happends so I dont know what could be wrong. Anyone else ever have a similar problem?

Thanks
MIke

Thats called a straight cut gear noise.
The reverse gears on almost all manual cars are not healically cut so they make a mashing whirring noise.
Have you not heard this in other stick cars?

Theres no way this is normal for a manual car. Its not a whirring, its more of a "eeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise, lol. And for some reason it doesnt do it all the time, but of majority of the time that I am going backwards (car in neutral) or in reverse it it makes the noise, its kinda embarrassing cuz it sounds like my car is seriously sick or something.

Have you checked all your fluids?

Have you checked your brake pads? Or the disk?

Fluids are all fine. If it were the brakes, wouldnt the noise be heard when going forward as well as backwards? This problem is really starting to bug now too, cuz its seems impossible to diagnose :(

Just wondering if you fixed the problem, I'm over in Manassas and I have the SAME noise whenever I am backing into a parking space. I just washed my car and it's REALLY bad right now, I dunno if it is because my brakes are wet or what.

Any ideas?
