I have an EVO 02 housing already, and the DP I have is the only one specifically made to bolt up to it. If the L1R was out, I might get it, but for now, my choices are 16G, big 16G, or 18G and I'm having trouble deciding. If I go by how fast people have run, then the 18G would be out of the question, but I know what one feels like, and well, "I like it.......I like it A-LOT!!" So right now I'm stuck in limbo.

Hehe thank you thank you.... ::takes a bow::

Mike you're gonna have to come for a ride when I get my fuel pressure situation fixed and the supra IC in. btw... do you weld aluminum? hehe

Unfortunately my welding skills have yet to be developed. BUT NONE OF YOU ARE HELPING ME......

16G - Big16G - 18G? WHICH ONE???

My goals for this car, are mid to high 12's on pump gas (93-94 octane) at 18psi with full supporting mods including FMIC.

Your suggestions?

my personal suggestion...either a small 16g or rock the 14b with tons of support in preparation for a larger turbo. look at jay haas. he runs mid 12s with MINIMAL mods (im sure he has some weight out and pounds the car to get there but nonetheless that is a crazy time). 11s have been run on the small 16g.

japdrifter he wants it on pump gas. Jay's was run on race gas.
Actually I went 12.7@107mph at 17psi for the first run right off the highway. :D I can do that on pump, as you know the problems don't start until I hit 20psi. The fact I'm on a stock o2 housing with no port work anywhere doesn't help with detonation control.

I'm pretty confident with a 16G, and dumped housing running 18psi he should be well into the 12s. Removing some weight helps a ton as well.

Crow, just get a small 16G (More efficient = cooler inlet temps which = happier on pump gas) dump to atmosphere, pull a couple hundred lbs out (Easy) and go drive the snot out of it.

You'll run a mid 12 no problem.

Small 16 Jay? I thought even YOU were going with a big 16....

And you still suggest I go with a small?
You originally asked about the big 16g so I assumed that's what you were going with. The reason *I* have a big 16 is because I got it and a 95 mani with a Greddy EGT probe for $500. The turbo is almost new.

I would have gone with a small 16g if I bought them new.

Here is what I wrote to you about this:
Here's what I think.

The Big 16G is ALREADY much less efficient than the small 16. Like 10 points, which is huge. This is due to stuffing a bigger wheel into the 16g compressor housing, it doesn't get along with the housing as well from an aerodynamic standpoint but does flow more air. Sort of a robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Actually if I bought a turbo new it would be a twin BB variant of some sort. :D

Yeah but FORMZ, you said you would have gone with an unported 18G either way.

I dunno, the decision is still a tough one for me. Like I said, I took a ride in Formz's car, and it feels much stronger than a small 16G.

I will probably end up with a big16. Anyway Jay, tell me where you are going to get that extrude honing done. I would like to do that as well, maybe up the efficiency of the big16 a little, thanks.

Crow, listen. I think we have all been very patient and understand you are having a hard time, but I also think you need to sit back think for a bit and stop being scatter brained.

How do you know what a small 16G pulls like when properly set up? I don't think Matt is pulling 116+mph in the quarter. (No offense Matt :) ) That's what many small 16g's have pulled.

Matt and Chris Tichy (Record holder 16G car) both got in my *14B* car and said "Holy crap, this thing pulls hard!"

You said you want to run mid 12's on pump. A small 16G will do it and is probably the best choice simply because it will have lower inlet temps.

Extrude honing the housings on the Big16G will not change the physics that say the wheel is too big for the housing. That's what is causing the drop in efficiency but giving the increase in flow. It's a aero/thermal/fluid dynamics principle. Extrude honing will help but it won't regain the 10 points lost. MAYBE a point or two. It will help the housing FLOW better though.

The 18G is a hybrid turbo. Good? Yes, but not the most efficient unit either.

If you want to do the housings just send them to *Extrude Hone* Do a search and find their locations, but I'm willing to bet if you type in www.extrudehone.com you will get something. ;) I think their East Coast location is outside Philly. I dunno, I used the west coast facility for my other work because the turbo was already out there.

Take your time. Pick a goal, and stick to it. It will save you time, money and headaches in the future.

I've ridden in 2 small 16G'd cars, one was poorly tuned, the other was very well tuned. The small 16G spooled quick, very quick, I honestly wouldn't mind a little lag on top of what it did already, so long as I can get more hp out of it.

All of the information that has surfaced because of this post is great, opinions of all included. But when it comes down to credit card being pulled out for use....the real deciding factor for me was experience first hand....thus far Matt's 18G has me convinced at this point....he was on race gas yes...21psi yes.....BUT it was all on the stock SMIC. I will have a FMIC to go along with the setup to help cool things down a bit.

Jay, your patience will run out if you even have any for me...I'm one of the most indecisive people in the world. Right now the 18G is in the lead....tomorrow it may be the small 16, the day after might be the big16. I have to keep doing this until finally, one holds more possesion over the rest. I thank you for your info and insight though. Its appreciated.

Mike, I NEVER said that I'd want an 18g unported. I said I wanted it unclipped. Thats a HUGE Difference.

No big deal haha

Yea Jay I did say that. But I meant for the mods you had. And no offense to you, but your car felt like my car at 16psi.

You have to bare with Mike, he's just a perfectionist ;)

OOPS... You know that I meant "unclipped" rather than "unported". Anyone that wouldn't want porting is retarded. Sorry bout that.

Well....I've narrowed it down to two...Big16 or 18... I go from there.

*sigh*

Ahh, yes yes but let's not forget that was with 6* total advance and 34 knock counts. :p You should feel the car at 20psi now that I got rid of the detonation. ;) I gained another 35whp since you were in it with no additional mods and removed another 150lbs. :) Actually you won't feel crap right now, I smoked the stock clutch. LOL

All jokes aside, you're 18G car WILL pull my 14B car no doubt, but I think it would be a closer race than you think now that I got the kinks sorted out. ;) I'm pretty confident the car would pull a 12.20 at 110-111mph right now provided I don't bang the rev limiter and get detonation in the top gears like I did on the 12.5 runs. :)

Then again, all this is just noise cause now I got the 16G, 95 mani, O2 eliminator tc etc. :D If I don't pull an 11.80 around 116mph, I'm going to burn it.

Mike: Chris Tichy put on an 18G from his 16G and went slower. Nothing else changed with the car. No matter how he tuned it, he couldn't regain the ET he got with the 16G. He hated the turbo. Something to think about.

Do what you gotta do, just make sure to match your parts to your goals. :)
