hey guys the paint on my 93' tsi is REALLY shit and there's a lil'rust on the underbody, how much do u guys thionk it'd cost to get a quality paintjob for a complete colour change to yellow if i sanded it down and primered it myself???????

roughly $1,000 give or take a few hundred. That's what I was quoted at with the same question. It's a lot less expensive to get the paint closely matched than it is to paint the car another color.

Cheapest way to do it if you want it done right and the color changed is to de-trim the entire car (mirrors, moldings, wing, taillights, headlights, reflectors, take the doors apart, etc.) and sand and do body work on the whole car yourself. That way, all a shop has to do is mask and spray the shell of the car. I'd guess at roughly 800-1000 bucks if you do it that way, but on the bright side, the paint will look nice and it won't look half-assed like if you took it to Maaco. 9 out of 10 Maaco jobs end up looking like shit because they spray over moldings, get overspray all over the place, and the paint has a lot of orange peel, fish eyes, and dirt in it.

IS IT actually cheaper to get the paint closely matched?!? why??? don't u have to sand down the car anyways, what difefernce does it make if u get the paint closeley matched???

If you get the pait closely matched, then they don't have to do much work on the engine bay, door jambs, etc. Actually, I would bet most places skip touching those areas altogether.

Also, when you change colors I beleive it takes mroe paint (and thus more labor) to cover up the old color, especially if it is a dark one.

Okay, guys my car is bright red but its like really shti tho cuz theres like oragne peel and stuff so how much do u guys think it'd cost to get it painted the EXACT same colour, if i sanded the exterior, detrimeed the whole car, and primered it????

Well, it shouldn't cost as much now, say somewhere around $750. It's a lot better idea to get the car paint matched for one because if you get a chip in the paint, that original color will stand out like a sore thumb.

what are u talkin about, im gonna sand the whole car down anyways, why woudl it mater if therees a chip in the paint??? the originial colour isn't gonna stillll be there, what are u talkin about?????????

Hash, why would you sand all of the old paint off of your car anyways? there is no need to take off all the old color, just rought the paint up a little so the new paint will hold. That might be what he is referring to with the old paint color being there. If you just rought the old paint up a little, it will save you A LOT of time heh.

Paint?

While on the subject of paintjobs....I was wondering if anyone knew about how much a paintjob like this would cost and/or what the name of this color is. Any help is appreciated and if it makes any difference in the price of the paintjob my car is white.

That's what I meant. Most of the time people will not spend the money for the car to be stripped to bare metal or spend the amount of time doing it by hand when they go for a color change. They say they will, but won't when they find out how much or how hard it is to be done properly. All a paint shop will do is rough up the stock paint, since there is already a good primer underneath from the factory, and paint over it. After the paint is done and out of the hands of the paint shop, I'm sure the driver might find a highway over time, possibly with some Dump-trucks without proper covers, sending rocks towards that front bumper and hood or some blown semi tires. BAM!! Rock or piece of tire takes out a small piece of paint, and you have that factory color showing because the new paint is just a new layer. Now if you get the color matched, it won't matter because it will be the same color underneath, thus the chip is less noticable. Sorry if it took a long time to get to this post, appearantly there's a time limit for me on here as to when I can post or have page errors.

DaGameXXX- It looks like a Kandy Orange, too many companies have different names for the same color  Kinda expensive and has to be put on in multiple coats to look that good. Once again though, look at what I've posted about changing the color over.

I did my own paint job for under $200...It took me a whole month to do it...but sure enough, it looks like a $3000 paint job in person...Everything was detailed to perfection!!:)...If you want to check out my ride, click & paste at the bottom of my signiture...

I saw a Third Gen VW Jetta with that color, and an Eclipse around here with it also. Your's looks a lot better though, but man I just don't like that wing (myopinion)

Well, it really depends on how much time your willing to sacrafice...Sanding & wetsanding was the easy part...about parts, I used about 1 gallon of PPG paint(DPU-base) which I mix it up with some other stuff...I had my friend(10yr experienced) to do the spraying...and we put 4-5 layers on....then used 3-4 layers of clearcoat.....and then I wet sanded the car until a smooth perfection....after that, I used a high powered buffer to smooth everything out even more (compound, glaze & polish)...I used 3M/Mequire products....after that was done, I waited about a week, then I applied the 1-2-3 step from Mequires and it brought out the color BIG-TIME....Anyone can do it...it's simple...and besides, at first, I was scared to do the color change, but when I saw the outcome, I was like "H3LL YEA!!"....

That color looks real close to House of Kolor Kandy Tangerine.I have sprayed that color several times and it is an awsome color. The picture you have there really dont do it any justice,I know the pic looks great but if you were to see that car in the sun you would shit yourself because it looked so good.
