Boys and girls, I am posting a picture of the intercooler setup that I am pondering. The purpose of this thread is to get some feedback from the gurus on the ups and downs of this HMIC before I start ripping the worlds nastiest set of hood louvers in my hood.
If the picture comes out? You can see that with the battery and air box relocation I have found room under the hood for this FAT intercooler that I have built. I have my own opinions of the ups and downs of this design.
UP is that the total length of IC piping will be about 14 inches, this eliminates the normal 7-10 feet of IC pipe. The obious advantages of this is that the Turbo will charge the system MUCH faster. UP #2 is that with the hood closed I will have the most discusting set of louvers cut into the passenger side of the hood, wich will look awesome.
Down side is the IC is under the hood and subject to higher temps. I would have to try to remedy this problem with obviously the vented hood (I mean HUGE louvers), I will also construct a heat shield that seperates the intercooler (passenger side of the engine bay) from the rest of the engine bay. Last but not leaste I have a couple of small A/C fans that I could easily locate directly below the HMIC to draw air through the hood vent, through the IC, and out under the car, when it is not in motion. The fans would continuously clear the passenger side of the engine bay of heat.
This HMIC would save me about $250 in mandrel bent aluminum tube, give me a very unique hood and if set up properly work as well if not better than being front mounted IMO. Crazy genious? Or Crazy just plain stupid?
