All:

I've noticed this is all the DSMs that I've come across. My friends 90 Talon has this whinning noise from the belts and my car whins like crazy on a cold start but then quiets down when the car is warm. Is this the belts or the timing tensioner pulley? I also passed a neighbor that drives an N/A 1G and her's was whinning too as she was parking.

What's up with this common whin noise? Is this normal for the DSM?

I agree... check the accessory belts. If I were you, I'd replace them anyways (if you haven't done so already). Inspect the pullies as well.

My 98 turbo always made a whine, especially noticable at idle speed. I believe it's the gears in the oil pump to rear balance shaft drive, as it's very unlike a belt or bearing sound. It's been doing it for years and hasn't changed.

Ok, bringing back a hella old thread, but instead of making a new one, I'll add. I'm getting this issue, and it only started maybe a month ago.

First of all, this engine is a fresh build, only 4k miles on it, and everything inside is new, aside from the cams. Just did an oil change and the oil seemed quite clean and smooth, which I'd hope it would be for being such a new engine.

I have a strange sound coming from the timing side of the engine. This happens when the engine is cold, and I rev up to just under 4k RPM, never below. It's always at that 3800 RPM when it comes out (I'm thinking it could be oil pressure related). As the car warms up and the oil pressure gradually comes down, the sound gets quieter, and even inaudible at any RPM. I wish I could record the sound, but I have no good equipment to record with. Just imagine a belt whine (not squeal), only loud and with more harshness (rasp)?

Anyway, I've removed the water pump, power steering, and alternator from the equation. I've also scoped the head, ex mani, intake mani, left side of the engine, and as I got to the right side (where I thought it was anyway) I scoped the brand new tensioner and idler pullies, then down to the oil pump area...here is where the sound was the loudest. As I move in any direction from the pump, it gets quiet. I have the balance shaft elim kit installed by the shop that built my engine. The pump is brand new OEM.

Now, since I have no balance shafts and no squirters, my oil pressure is expected to be higher. I have mildly ported the oil filter housing, but if the engine is cold, the pressure can easily reach 100 or 120 if I give it more. When the engine is hot, 100 is reachable with WOT.

So, can failing oil pumps make this kind of sound, but quiet down as the car warms up? Could the pump or balance shaft elim kit cause this? Can high oil pressure cause the pump or balance shaft elim kit to make noise?
