I know my name has NT in it, but I got a 96 TSI AWD a couple months ago. It's bone stock except for a new cone (K&N copycat) filter I just bought.

Anyway, I hooked the filter up at the end of my MAF censor and it seemed okay at first. Car idles fine and everything. But when I build up some boost the car starts bucking very bad. It HAS to be something to do with that filter, because I drove home with the thing, put it on and now the car does it. I'm gonna go mess around with it for a little bit and see if it's something small that I may have overlooked, but any help would be appreciated. Another question is, if I've got leaks around the filter, could that cause anything? It's not sealed up so. . . if that means anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

A leak around the seal of the filter won't make it run bad, but it will let unfiltered air in. Remember that there is a small tab that you must get lined up correctly. Check to make sure that you got the hose on the end of the mass tight, and make sure it is plugged in good.

I second sean. Sounds like the MAS isn't completely connected, or connected at all. Or, I don't know why this would be, but you loosed up one of the hose clamps on the turbo side of the MAS, and didn't tighten them back up so that the turbo is sucking in some un-metered air.

Ok, I'm sort of running into the same problem. Installed a DejonTool 2.5" intake pipe about 2 weeks ago, car ran fine. Got the filter and breather filter in last week and installed those. Car still ran great, but a service engine light came on, no biggie though, I know I need to get it checked out. Pocketlogger time, but anyways.

Then, yesterday I replaced the valvecover gasket along with all the other ones up top. After I got everything sealed up tight and took the car back home, I crossed some rail road tracks, and put it into 3rd. As I start building boost around 2000rpms or so the car starts bucking pretty harsh. Now it's more or less doing it whenever I step on the gas pretty hard with lower rpms, just starting to build boost.

Anyways, I'll take things apart tomorrow and see if I find a cure.

Okay, two things. 1. Not that you couldn't just look under the hood, but if you revv it up in neutral and the car won't go up past 3k and sounds like shit, there's probably something wrong with the MAS or it's not hooked up.

2. Did you remember to re-connect the three lines that run to the intake, and connect them to the correct place? If you didn't do that it would also make the car run like shit.

Well, I've tried disconnecting the battery, didn't help. But I know it's the mass now. I disconnected it and (of course) the car wouldn't hardly idle, but I can accelerate and boost just fine with no bucking now. I plug it back in; shudder shudder buck buck (when boosting only, if I hold the accelerator and maintain high RPM's in neutral the shuddering stops as the boost lessens).

100 bucks says it's that damn tab. It's kind of a homemade concoction that I've got going, so it's probably not lined up too well. What's that tab do that would cause such a problem?

Thanks for all the help so far.

Well, I just woke up and haven't touched mine yet, but 2 of 3 vacuum hoses on my car are elimated, char can and valve cover line. So those aren't affecting it, and it'll rev fine past 3k in neutral, so I've just gotta play around until I figure it out.

Okay, I played around with it and got the tab on correctly, the car has a bit of a shudder when I rev it in neutral (very small shudder, but I may have had that before, I never rev it in neutral, so I'm not sure). And I've eliminated the bucking except for one instance at about 4K in 4th gear while accelerating.

My problem now is that I seem to have lost power. The car doesn't accelerate as fast now. It seems almost like it's pulling something. I just don't get it.

Maybe I should just scrap the whole idea, considering I'm not planning any heavy mods so as to not void my (extended) warranty.

Well, I checked all connections on the mas, all seals for intake pipe and hose clamps, etc. I then removed my valve cover and resealed it with RTB blue just to make sure that was tight. Then I took it for a test drive and it's still doing this. So, I guess I'll have to wait until next week and pull it into my garage and actually start taking things apart. Maybe it's also time to buy another pda and dsmlink.
