I dont understand it....

The transmission in my car was rebuilt about 4 months ago. I never knew how it drove after the work since I havent had it 4 months yet. When I go into gear I know its in gear because it will feel like it grabs funny in the shifter or linkages somewhere. If it doesn't do this going into first then i am usually still out of gear. Untill now...

Tonight I pulled the tranny fill plug because The seal on the transmission cover is leaking a bit so I wanted to top it off. I think it was about 1 qt. low on oil!! After i filled it, i let it sit for about 2 hours to level off. Put plug in and started it up to take for a spin. (also shifter is mounted to the floor...no bushings.... was like this when i got it) It seemed to go into gear a bit smoother and doesn't grab weird anymore really. Just once in awhile. I have not drove it for awhile too so i might not be usto it again yet. It seems to pop out of first gear MORE often now. It might be because I cant feel the grab really....? Anybody have any ideas?? When i filled the trans back up, the old oil looked (the shit that came out) kind of burned.

ONE MORE QUESTION!!! Will vaccume pressure be higher on startup or after its warmed up??? Thanks

Your shifter might need adjustment. Go here for info...
I'd also look to install new bushings (preferably a symborski kit) into that console- just for added shifting stability. :)

So you dont think its the transmission?? That is what i worry about the most even though its new:) but i guess i cant feel it grab anymore or just plain shifts different since my oil in the transmission is full. thanks

Well, I wouldn't completely rule out the tranny.

The thing I'm learning with DSM's is this:

If you're experiencing problems with say, the engine, start with the sensors, vaccum lines, oil, cleaning issues, and whatever cheap repairs you can do. Then work up in price (check the belts, ECU, and so on). Basically start with the easiest/cheapest fix and then work "up" to the heavy/expensive issues if the problem dosen't go away.

So I said it would be good to check the shifter and that site I linked because it's easier/cheaper than overhauling the entire transmission. Many times, the problem IS a cheap/easy issue since the little cheap parts are the ones that get out of line or wear out first (and if you catch it early enough you won't have to worry about an expensive part breaking).

So start little/cheap, and then work your way up to big/expensive until it's fixed. :)

Also, from what the webpage says, it sounds like that's what's wrong with your tranny/shifter. Like I said, take the shifter out, adjust it, and install the symborski kit from Machv.com and that will eliminate any rubber bushing that could be rotting and making your shifter feel like melted ice cream. :) So start with the shifter adjustment/bushings. If the problem is still there, and everything was done right and you didn't forget to install a bolt or something (happens to me all the time  ) then just post here and someone will help.
Sorry this is a novel, but good luck man.

If you can't feel it grabbing, then here's the next area I'd check- the clutch system- ( clutch, clutch lines, clutch fluid, slave cylinder).

Click here for slave cylinder information...

You mentioned you just had a tranny rebuilt... it could be the clutch is not in line, or something with the slave cylinder, clutch fluid, or a worn clutch line itself (time to upgrade to stainless :D )

actually i have the act2100. BUT i got under the car again today and i noticed some weird fluid under the car. it looked like tranny fluid but i am pretty sure it is clutch fluid!!!! i think its leaking from the slave...? cylinder. the one that is on the bottom of the transmission. Could this cause this? Thanks everybody for the replies! I will start to go through everything one by one. I like the idea of starting cheap and moving to more expensive parts. that is what i will do. thanks everybody.

You and me both :D

Just make sure you start the car up and get it running normally every now and then- or if you want to permenantly put the car away until say March or April... flush the coolant out completely, drain the oil, drain the gasoline, etc. It would be good to drain all fluids so they just don't sit there (especially the coolant).

If that's the case then it would be a great time to install stainless steel lines, and/or replace the lines the fluids travel through so they'll be in great shape for the spring.

Clean out the injectors, check the battery, replace the fuel filter, replace the vaccum hoses...

These cars are a project even when they aren't running hehe...

Just some suggestions :)
