Ok earlier today I was trying to remove the silencer off my MAS. I was not sure of how to do it, but I tried anyway. I have a HKS MAS along with the HKS filter that I bought from a friend.

First I unscrewed the brown plastic cover (I dunno why) and broke off the black cover that was under it. Then I unscrewed the silver metal thingy, and realized that I couldn't do anything with it so I screwed it back on along with the black cover (I broke all the clamps that was holding it in but I just placed it back on and screwed in the brown thingy (I may have screwed up my MAS at this point).

I then pulled out the round screen thingy out of the sides and I scraped the brown cardboard out with a screwdriver (thinking that it was the silencer), then I replaced that round screen thingy.

I may have screwed up my MAS but im not sure. So I placed everything back together like it was suppose to be. Then I cranked up my car and my car was idling real bad. It kept idling up and down to the point where my car sounded like it was going to cut off, and it did cut off a couple of times.

Well do any of you peeps know what the problem is?? If so is there a way to fix this problem.

Thanks

ok... FIRST the scilencer is that white star looking thing where the intake pipe connects. You remove it by unscrewing the metal intake can plate from the mas... 8 screws i think... then it just falls out of the plate.

Now did you rember to plug in your mas? Is there a checkengine light? If there is then get a datalogger and check the error codes. If it says any thing that has to do with barometer, air temp ect. YOU killed your mas. What year / model is this car? If it is a 1gnt i have a mas i would be willing to sell you fairly cheep.

seriously 99% of the time when you put your mas back together you forget to plug it in and the car will barely idle and you go oh shit. ive done it dozens of times hehe

I had a 94 excel, it has an almost identical sensor as a 1g except its more restrictive. I took all the sound crap off and looked at the mas, it looked kindy restrictive so I decided to cut it to flow better(I really didn't think it would mind?). I cut both of the air inlets under the sensor part and installed it then started the car. I couldn't idle worth shit:confused: , luckily I got one from a junkyard for $35. The car actully didn't run very bad at all w/o the mas except it made a little less power, not like a turbo dsm that drives like shit.

One of my main concerns is that brown kinda paper stuff that is in the main passage (the bigger honeycomb). Well for some reason I tried to scrape out all that brown paper stuff out of the main passage. I was wondering if this could be a big deal or not?? B/c after i did my car was idling rough. I just wanted to know if there is a way to resolve this problem.

Thanks

Inside that passage is where the mas measures airflow by bouncing a signal back and forth from those holes, the brown paper might have something to do with dampening the waves making the airflow reading more accurate. You might be seeing a form of feedback now that the paper is gone giving you a rough idle. Thats just the way I would see it but it might be the problem...
