This car is REALLY starting to PISS me off.
IM over heating....BUT only when I Drive REALLY hard or after Im on the interstate for 10 minutes at 70 mph...
Ive installed:
New Rad cap, New 180' Thermostat, Flush/filled coolant 50/50,
Removed AC condensor for better flow to the radiator.Checked flow to see if water pump is ok.( new WP in 03/02)
I even did a compression Test. From left to right as you look at the engine: 160, 165, 150, 150. If im not mistaken thats about normal. I know 124 is the service limit.
I give up. I cant race my car, or even drive fast on the interstate without it over heating. I never see any smoke from the exhaust, I never see puddles of coolant under the car, The oil is NOT chocolate milk, and Thats it thats all ive come up with.
Shit, even when I replaced the damn thermostat today its running hotter at idle than with the old one and they re BOTH 180 deg Thermostats. My headgasket was recently replaced, LIkwe I said I give up.....PLEASE if anyone has any suggestions let me know if theres something im missing.
Thanks!!

Maybe the radiator isn't full. Idle the engine with the pressure cap off until the thermostat opens and you see plenty of flow. Then fill to the top.

Are your fans running at all? Did you make sure there was enough coolant in the system after the car has warmed up? Is the coolant boiling in the overflow container? Sounds like you've checked everything else. Take the radiator cap off and watch to see if the coolant is actually flowing once the thermostat has opened up (once car has warmed up).

Do you have an aftermarket gauge? Maybe it is just the gauge at fault? Make sure the rad. is full too not just the overflow.. Does it happen at idle and does your fan work? Dont really know what could be causing it but maybe this could help..Good luck

AHH yes....I forgot to mention that I have my fans Wired together. They both come on when the ignition is on. As far as filling the radiator, I usually open the drain, let it drain out. then flush the old stuff out with a hose until it runs clear. THEN I put the drain plug back in, turn the heater on the high setting like the manual says. I fill it up until the water reaches the water neck lid. I turn the car on with the cap off, and the heat on high, and wait until the thermostat opens, then I let it flow for a minute and top it off, Squeeze the hoses to let out bubbles, and put the cap back on, Fill overflow bottle to full. Thats how I did it. I might have made a mistake because it says its 7.3 quarts of coolant. I could only get about 6 quarts in. Also after I drive around then the next morning, I can open the cap and put another 1/2 quart in sometimes. Im lost.........I even put a 2g radiator in.

mabby your water pump is dead or not working good. do you see the water rushing through the sytem when you have the cap off? well when my water pump went it leaked alot and then sometimes a little right out the side were the pulley is it and overheated soom. well my water pump made a lot of a loud bearing noise when it went also. just a thought

If you own a 2g, why did you say you installed a 2g rad? Also make sure your getting proper flow to the radiator. What are the temps down there, because i know if i beat my car in the summer it gets a little hotter than it should...

SORRY!! heh this is in my 92 Laser AWD.

Mods:
AGP L2R (not even 50 miles on it)
2g MAS
Custom Front Mount
HKS SS BOV
Ported heads, w/SS Valves
95 Pistons Recoated
Eagle Rods
Ported o2 housing, Ported 2g manifold
BR 3' Turboback w/Testpipe
MSD DIS2
S-AFC
750cc injectors
ACT 2600
Welded Center Diff

BTW I forgot to mention that when Ive raced a couple people in the past 2 days, they people driving behind me said that when I accelerated and after the usual big cloud of black smoke that emits form DSM's they said a bunch of WET stuff sprayed on there windsheild.
I just dont know where the damn coolant is goin? theres NO Smoke, NO puddles, NO drips, Etc Etc. It just overheats when I race....Im a pretty good mechanic, and have been working on this car for a LOOOONG time and have been able to diagnose every other prob.....This I just dont get....

Maybe you are making enough boost at WOT to lift the head for a short while. Does the overflow bottle fill up? Otherwise, I'd suggest you make sure all the hoses on the recovery system are nice and tight. If not, then the coolant, when it expands will go to the bottle as it should but then as the engine cools it will replace this coolant with air.

The overflow bottle I usually keep at the full mark. Sometimes after I drive its Filled ALL the way to the lid. If I open the radiator cap halfway, it releases pressure BUT its sprays it outta the overflow bottle. Thats just with the NEW Rad cap I put on yesterday, The old one would release the pressure from the rad cap. Im gonna go out and do ANOTHER compression test.

This is sounding like HG. How much boost are you running?

Well, you might be pushing your luck there. ARP hardware or those stretchable bolts?

Don´t laugh at me ,but it could be your radiator !!!

I HAD the same problem on my 92´Galant (wintercar) it did go hot on the highway......i hatet it !!!
I changed : Thermostat,waterpump,headgasket and so on :realmad: .

And the i realized the real problem : the radiator had to less flow.

It was bunged up with something (i guess limesstone)
I bought a new one and everything was allright :D .

I hope this will help you :)

P.s. Sorry about my english ,i am from europe (austria).

I have a 2g radiator in my 1g. I will try to flush it with some good cleaner and see what happens...I just did a another Compression test on it and its now: 180/150/160/160...if that matters...
After i tried to clean my radiator (with vinegar , for 24hours:D )
it was totally bunged up (much more than before )
And the car got even hoter ,also at lower speed
 .
Be warned !

I drove to the sparepartsshop with heating at full throttle an windows open.......´THIS was fun :p .

What ratio did you coolant and water? More that 50% anitfreeze to water will cause over heating as well.

I have to agree w/barney. I've seen this happen with a local DSM race car on several occasions when running relatively high boost. On the dyno you can actually watch the coolant being forced into the overflow bottle at boost. But when you do a compression test (no boost) it's not visible.
