You'd better be a good fabricator for this! Your best bet is to measure ALL suspension points of the 1G on a level surface. Cut the front frame off with as much intact as possible, saving all wiring, connecters, hoses, lines etc. Unbolt and drop out the rear suspension.

Measure and cut out the appropriate areas in the CRX and fab mounts for the rear sub-frame. Fab whatever is required to weld in the front DSM frame as complete as possible with the engine, tranny, xfer case, steering, etc, etc.

The more of the factory mounts you incorporate the easier it will be. It won't be light anymore after all this however. If you can maintain the factory subframes and mounting points you could plant it in almost any body.

If you are going to do this project, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to use a haltech or other high end standalone? you are going to have to do all the wiring anyway. you might as well go ahead and do it right. i bet it would save a lot of time too since you wouldn't have to hook up anywhere near as many wires.

this project sounds awesome. keep us updated.

looking at my 90 CRX, the swap would be VERY difficult for a awd CRX, its def gonna be work upon work =|

Have you thought about putting the motor in the hatch? It'd be alot of work but no more than putting AWD in the thing. You don't seem to be affraid of custom work so it might be an idea.

There was more I wanted to say but I forgot, bleh.

The CRX does have a tunnel in the middle of the chasis so the drive shaft could go through it. The exhaust could be made using nascar style oval pipes and exit behind the driver or passenger door (probably driver). The car would need a custom subframe in the back or a modified dsm item. Drive shafts would have to be custom made (or see comment below). AEM could probably provide a crx ecu with dsm software.

The cable tranny would work just fine. He woud have to plug stock shifter hole in the hump and just bolt on the dsm shifter to the floor, or mount it high, like rally cars, using washers or a custom bracket. CRX clutch is cable activated. Personally, if I was doing that project I would install floor mounted pedals and plumb the clutch and re-plumb the the brake system and upgrade brakes at the same time. The driver could also be moved as far back as possible to improve front to rear weight balance. Have a steering wheel spacer made to put steering wheel where it's comfortable for the driver (if driver is moved back).

Put the batery in the trunk. Use a Typhoon/cyclone air/water intercooler, a custom air/water intercooler or supra intercooler as smic. Put a fuel cell in the back of the car behind the driver, as close as possible behind the seats. Add a fuel cell firewall.

He could use dsm spindles in the back. One thing to do would be to fabricate suspension arms using rod ends and aluminum tubes (they can be bought at any speed shop or circle track shop).

Front dsm spindles could also be used both front and back.

The project sounds like a lot of fun but will need a lot of custom work/fabrication.

Actually, i would use stock length dsm axles as the suspension has to be re-engineered anyway and just cut fenders/quarter pannels and add flares. "Wider is better" just like they say on tv. I would also design/fabricate a rear defuser and a front flat spoiler with difusers. Add a wing for high speed stability.

Rear engined crx would be a lot of fun too as imoore suggested. Put the fuel cell up front. Put a firewall between the engine and passenger compartment. This would need a ot of custom wiring but one could buy a painless wiring kit for cars with rear engines.

Good luck and have fun.

I wouldn't mind having AWD in a CRX but it's gonna be a pain to do it. Depending on cost and how much power you're looking to put down will determine weather it's worth it or not.

CRX's are very light car's. With the Front-Wheel Drivetrain, anything over about 200whp is enough to rip up the first 2~3 gears. With a turbo car, and the way the torque comes on it's even more trouble to keep traction. Trust me it's a bitch when you don't bother to even street race....... b/c you know the bone stock 1.5L coupe could take you, until you hit 3rd and catch traction.

*cough* speaking from experience *cough*

I like it, the initiative anyway. The build, kind of looks,,,junkyardish. If that is a word. If junkyardish is not a word then I hearbye declare it a word. From now on it will be defined as resembaling that welded together AWD CRX--Junkyardish.:scholar:
