When i fired up the car when i got out of tech school, i heard a clanking sorta noise which i think was coming from the trans. So i depressed the clutch and the noise went away!! .. i let my foot off the clutch and the noise went back again. so i was wondering if it was my T/O bearing going bad.

My auto tech teacher came up to me at the lot, and i told him about it. He says that its probaby the transmission bearing going bad. Then he tells me to bring my car in the shop and we'll rip out the tranny! .. time to drop in a new clutch also :D

so wat do u think it is?!

btw, it rarely makes that noise(sounds like a loose metal/clanking noise or watever it is, who knows)

i hope it is only the T/O bearing. i have an OEM t/o bearing i got from the dealer last summer thats been sitting in my room along with my clutch picking up dust.

my teacher should know better tho

Mine is doing the same chatter noise and also goes away when the clutch is depressed. I got my tranny out and i dont know how to tell if a t/o bearing is bad. I havent had time to open up the tranny, my cousin says his maxima had the exact same problem and found out it was a main shaft bearing in his tranny. Marq4g63 let us know what you find out. By the way i never bothered to check my fluid that couldve been a possibility.

Well its probably the main shaft bearing or T/O bearing(which is less likely) ill find out soon tho and let you guys know. I got 2 days(2 Fri's) in a week to work on my tranny, and its my 1st time along with others helping me out. I just hope everything goes well.

UPDATE: my motor died last week and i have a new JDM motor on the way to be put on early next week. The engine is already pulled out of the bay and the tranny is just hanging around.

So when i get my motor and tranny put back together then ill let ya know. till then..

My tranny also makes the same noise. I have a new clutch. But when you press in the clutch, it goes away. ALSO, it goes away when you move the gear shifter around in nuetral (clutch up). Had the tranny taken apart about a year ago, he said all bearings look fine...But one probably is bad....

I had the original tranny in my car when I bought it, and it made a noise similar to what you're describing... it was a whirring/chattering noise. It would be intermittent at idle with the clutch released, but as soon as the clutch was depressed the noise would cease. Needless to say, when I replaced my clutch and put in a new T/O bearing, the noise remained. I talked to several other local DSMers and they said they've had several trannys make the same noise with no ill effects. I drove with my tranny making that noise for approx. 20k miles (to 155k) until it the second gear syncros finally went. Replaced tranny, no more noise :)
