Ok, here's the deal: I ripped out most of my A/C system (Condensor, belt, compressor, lines, & EVAPORATOR behind the dash). The evaporator was a pain in the balls, not recommended! Anyways, I was wondering if it is ok to leave it out, or does something have to be connected there from a non-a/c car? (The reason I ask is because I could have sworn I read this somewhere).

Another question: I keep reading that there's a bracket that the compressor bolts onto and it has to be modified, but when I removed the 4 bolts holding on my compressor there was no bracket attached, is this bracket attached to the block? So, am I supposed to put the bolts back in minus the compressor?

Thanks for the help!

To my knowledge just take everything out that the a/c is hooked up to. Follow all the lines to the a/c radiator and go from there. That should take everything out.

My only concern was that there would be something under the dash that connected to the left of the evaporator? O yeah, if you guys do take out the evaporator it will leave a pretty big hole in your firewall!

Any other comments?

Can't help you with the evaporator, but the driver's axle bolts into the AC compressor bracket. You'll want to leave it on there or use something else to shim it up.

I don't know about 2gs, but when I took the evaporator out of my 1g, if I didn't put the plastic case that surrounded it back into the dash, there is no way I would have gotten air to the rest of the dash vents. Air from the blower motor passes through the evaporator on it's way to the rest of the vents. I just took the evaporator out of the case and reinstalled only the case.

I ended up sealing the hole in the plastic case that goes through the firewall with some sheetmetal and JB Weld. Haven't had any problems with it yet.

Well if thats the case then I am SOL. Since I couldn't get to the bolt on the very bottom of the plastic box I decided to break around it  . The box is sort of damaged. I think you're right, the air will not be able to get to the passenger side of the car. I guess whoever is riding shit gun will have to freeze their ass off! Actually, looks like my talon will be sitting in my garage for about a year (going away to school and bringing the 90 GST since that car IS registered:D ).

Thanks for the info guys.

I got the parts out of a non-AC car in the junkyard. The big ones you need are the tunnel thingy that goes where the evaporator and housing used to go, this new piece is MUCH smaller and lighter. The room under my dash is amazing now. You also can get an oval plug for the firewall. Its rubber. You also need the blockoff for the switch on the dash.

Ahaha, I thought I was the only one that did that. It sure is cold without a heater!

I have been trying to find a non-AC car parting out on the trader but I have yet to find one. All I did for the time being was made a duct out of duct tape and cardboard (which actually works really well).

That is so ghetto!:D I love it! I think I may go the Home Depot Motorsports route. Finding a non-a/c car may be a pain in the ass. I would think the driver's side heat would still work??

You, sir, fucking rule!

This is why I own 2 DSM's and not a honda. People are always saying " You have so many problems with that thing, you should just sell it and get something else" Ok, RIIIIGGGGHHHT! (Dr. Evill voice). Screw that.

As for those parts numbers, I am going to look up that one thread that went really into detail about A/c removal. This info about removing the evaporator and replacing it with these parts is very helpfull. Thanks.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but since you guys have things figured out. I am actually trying to KEEP my a/c, I sprung a leak and I can't find it anywhere, I'm now thinking it's the evaporator inside my console.

HOW did you guys get to this? I am told I have to take the ENTIRE dash, steering column etc to get to it!!

Now, any way I can go from the firewall side, or better yet through the glove box?

I'm still unsure where it is exactly and if I can get to it either way. I'm looking to see it first to check if there is a leak (with UV dye) and then replace it most likely since I can't find anything else anywhere.

Thanks!

I don't know about 2G, but on 1G the only thing you need to take off is the glove box. The dashboard and even the fan can stay in place and the evaporator box is mounted to the chassi with only 4 12mm bolts.

Umm okay, I would *hope* for it to be as easy as Taboo says... but since you only know for 1g's :(

thegreatms are you CERTAIN I can't get through it any other way than removing the entire dash console, etc to get to it? Since I am getting off work so late, it's hard for me to try to rip apart the car in the dark and re-assemble it to get to work tomorrow.

Maybe this will have to wait until the weekend.

Any other 2g guys can tell me about the removal process?

no, I'm not certain, bc i have never done this myself. I don't even own a 2G. But, I have worked on that area in a buddies 2G and its pretty tight. If your just trying to look in there to see the leak you should be ok. But if you find it you might have to take more of the dash out to fix it.
