Im buying a turbo back for my 98 gsx from rnr im gonna run a ported 14b with a 7cm turbine housing for about a month or two then im buying a big16g to mount to my 7cm housing to. Im going to have all the neceassary mods for each application to support these turbos. The thing is i live in an area where the police are plentifull and seem to be very biased toward loud japanese cars. People have v8s around here with cherry bombs on them and they dont even get bothered. My question is if i get a full 3 inch is it going to be crazy loud and im goin to get bothered all the time, and is a 2.5 good enough for a big16g. If the 3" is needed i will get it. Does anyone out there have any experience with rnr's turbo backs how loud they are and if they have any problems with the police on these exhausts. THANKYOU for all your input

3" is a lot to put up with, but if you get one with a resonator on it then you'll be a little better off. Depending on what you are after 2.5" will take you into the 11's.

so i dont have to worry about the creep showing up on a 2.5
well, that all depends on what your boost is set at, your flapper size, if you've ported etc...

You'll definatly be LESS likely to creep with 2.5"

Well i will be porting my turbine housing and installing a 34mm flapper i plan on running about 18 psi what do you guysthink will a 2.5 work good with a 14b and a b16g at that boost level

I always recommend the 3" turbo backs with SS muffler option. This is what we use on all our daily drivers here and we love it. They really aren't that loud at all. It's pretty quiet at idle and cruise. Then when you really open it up it gets loud. For a daily driver and a 16g I would say go for a full 3" system. You will never have to upgrade again and it provides more power potential.

True, but most people aren't going to get to the point where they're outgrowing their 2.5". I love my RnR 2.5" turbo-back and don't think I will ever need to upgrade it.

I myself wanna go 3" catback.. I already got my 2.5" turbo back from Ryan (RnRRacing).. I wonder if Ryan will do upgrades on exhaust for catbacks and if he'll recycle my 2.5" catback for a 3" catback for a lesser price?? :D Or if anyone in the san diego area wants to buy my 2.5" catback, let me know.. so I can upgrade to a 3" catback..

Why? Especially if you're actually running a cat, I see no reason to go 3"-- that cat is much more of a restriction (no matter how "hi-flow" it is) than a 2.5" would be compared to a 3".

My opinion is that you don't need 3" until you're running 11s. Many people quote Corky Bell's book, Maximum Boost, as saying that 2.5" will support up to 500HP. I can't confirm that since I haven't read the book yet, but if that's a correct quote, it seems to make sense. 500HP seems a little high to me, but I'm sure Mr. Bell knows a heck of a lot more about turbos than I do. It's probably all just keyboard racing anyway until we can get somebody to do back-to-back testing of a 2.5" vs. 3" system on the same car with the same mods.

To me, the advantages of 2.5" seem to be: 1) less noise, and therefore less hassle by authorities, 2) possibly less boost creep, 3) no noticeable performance difference, and 4) less chance of getting it scraped up because of it hanging too low (my 2.5" is routed over the rear axle, but I don't think a 3" would fit).
