whats responsible for that high-pitched whining noise the engine makes? Its really apparent with the windows rolled down cruising slowly in 1st or 2nd at about 2500-3000 rpms...kinda sounds like a lear jet. It seems like it was alot more obvious after the motor was rebuilt last year. I figured maybe it was the oil pump or just the sound of a "tight" high compression motor (although the static comp is only ~8.5:1.)

Judging by the fact he's made it to "Premium DSMTalker" status, I'm guessing he knows what sound the turbo makes.

I think the sound your hearing is the valvetrain, as our engines are known for an incredibly loud one.

My other idea is one of the accessories (PS, Alternator, etc) or the transmission. I know exactly what sound your talking about though.

What about the really high pitched noise coming from the rear, I can hear it in my '93 when the engine is on and I go around to the back. It's definitely not the exhaust or engine, it sounds electronic. Is that the fuel pump?

If you have an aftermarket fuel pump, then yes. If you don't then it COULD be but it's not something I've heard of too often unless the pump is on it's last legs.

It must be the valvetrain then. Maybe it has a high level of resonation in those lower rpm ranges. Its pretty loud on my 1G but it sounds kinda neat. Ive never spent any quality time with a 2G car, so dont know if they make that type or level of noise, but according to you they do.
