I got my "big brakes" yesterday from a junk yard. The rotors have about a .4mm lip on the back side only (weird?). I can turn them, but they will just barely be within the minimum thickness cast into the rotor (22.4mm - they are at about 23.4mm right now). Autozone (or was it Advance?) has replacement rotors for like $30 each. I can return the jyard ones I have, so which way should I go? Is there really even a need to turn the stock ones? I plan to use the pads that are in the calipers I got for now (they look fairly new), as I am short on funds, but not sure if I can do that if I go with new rotors.

Also - I noticed two "W" shaped wires pressed into the vents in one of the rotors. I removed one of them to look at it, and it looks as if it was designed to fit in there. What is that? Should I leave them if I use these rotors, or toss 'em?

Thanks.

If you need some rotors to drive(you didn't say of this was your DD) then get some autozone ones, but If you can wait get some power slot rotors, I think that will be your best bet. They will work much better than junk yard ones or autozone ones, and they arn't that expensive.

Yeah, it is my daily driver. I think I am just going to go with the ones from Advance. They are Wearever brand, and they look just like the OEM ones. I went by there and looked at them today. Optimally, I would like to get Powerslots, but I just don't have the extra cash right now.

If your tight on cash then go with the Autozones. At $60- bucks for the pair it wont break the bank and even if they only last a year, maybe you will be in a better position to get something thats higher quality by then. I think if you were to turn the junkyard ones they may tend to warp quickly do to them barely being in spec............ Although this would be the cheapest way, If you only need them to last a few months maybe. Something to think about..............

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Your sig is great by the way! I went to Auburn, and there were big yellow letters beside our stadium my Freshman year that said "NO PRAKING". Classic. An institute of higher learning, and they can't spell p-a-r-k-i-n-g.

Thanks........... That "NO PRAKING" would have been a classic picture to have. :D

Install and run the junkers, save up for fancy ones. No need to turn them, within five miles they'll have "turned" themselves. You're not having to haul down from 210 off the Mulsanne Straight, you're driving around town and maybe messing around an hour a week. Factory stock brakes have days of over-engineering to save the stupid (or more correctly, save the manufacturers from being sued by the stupid).
The wire "W"s are vibration snubbers, trying to kill disc brake squeal.

And never mine the spelling, if you get caught praking at school, they'll send you away. For a very long time.
