I'm trying to replace the valve cover gasket but the valve cover is stuck. The vfaq article says to use a rubber mallet. What't the proper way of taking the rubber mallet to the valve cover?

Use lots of **** (<---technical term) to seal it back up or you'll just be doing it over again like I had to. Also, the valve cover bolts need very little torque to strip the threads in the head, so don't overtighten them.

I used RTV to seal it after i had mine off. The bolts dont need be tightened down too much either its very easy to crack the VC so be careful when putting it back together.
You can always go back and tightten them down more but you cant take the cracks out of the VC if you tighten it too much.

11-14lbs of torque on the valve cover bolts. Also you only need to apply RTV sealant around the half circle part of the gasket set.

Invest in a manual of some sort even if it's a $12 Haynes manual for all the little things, mine has come in very handy to have in the garage.

yeah i cracked my cover, and i just used jb weld to seal it up
I bought my car and the VC had JB weld on it. It was leaking oil all over my belts and what not. Not a pretty thing. If you crack it just pay up for the 35 bucks and get a new VC. When i did that i got mine sandblasted and then painted it too. :D
