"how is this different from the limited slip insert that b&m sells for like $200. anyone know what im talkin about??"

Completely different. The B&M one as well as the Phantom grip LSD will mimic a welded differential but give after a certain amount of force. They clamp the 2 opposing planetary gears together to give each drive shaft equal power. So what they gives you is a constant 50/50 split in power between the two wheels unless enough force is applied to allow the planetary gears to slip). This is quite the advantage in straight line acceleration over a stock diff. This is all they do though. This sucks for cornering where one wheel wants to spin faster then the other. The inside wheel travels less distance then the outside wheel in any given corner yet the rate of speed of the car is shared, therefore, the outside wheel has to spin faster to cover the longer distance it's traveling. The B&M type of LSD insert resists this.

The Quaife LSD actively changes the power split ratio. When a tire starts to break loose the quaife transfers more and more power to the other one until it evens out. This gives you about the same results in a straight line then the B&M (or a little better) at the expense of some torque steer resulting from the power ratio changing. But it's in the corners where the quaife really shines. You can accelerate out of the corners far more then with a stock diff or a B&M type.... far, far more.

Plus after I lost some teeth of my stock diff resulting in a toasted tranny I would never run with one again. As I said the B&M and Phantom grip use the stock diff and just lock the 2 sides together (up to a point). It's still the same weak stock diff in there. The Quaife is very robust and comes with a lifetime waranty.

So the Quaife is better in every respect. But on the other hand the B&M is only $200. If you only drag race and aren't running too much horsepower it can meet your needs fine.

There's a huge review in this forum on the B&M if you do a little searching.

How much boost are you running? I was wondering how traction was going to be when i get my 20g. I know 1st will be use less but i was wondering about it for 2nd gear roll ons.
Right now I am running 17 psi because I still have the stock sidemount. (I am the last one on the SpoolinUp groupbuy.) Should have it next weekend hopefully. Like I mentioned, my second gear is pretty nice now, when it is warm outside. If it is cold, both tires just break loose and spin pretty bad. When it's warm, a litle chirp and the car takes off.

Actually, the stock sidemount is holding its own at 17 psi, no knock or very little, like 1-2 counts. I tried about 22 psi, but knock started showing up, so I won't do that again until the front-mount gets installed. Luckily I have DSMLink to flash the check engine light when timing is being pulled due to knock.

For those of you running the quaife, do you feel a lot of gains in the wet? I'm sure it must help a lot, I'm just looking for some empirical data.

It doesn't rain often here (Bay Area, CA), but when it does the dusty, oily, diesel soaked roads get pretty slick. Just tonight I kinda slipped and slided my way through a stop sign on my bike (oops). Hehe, if you think FWD is tractionless in the rain, try a 150hp bike with a 180 rear tire. You'll think having two powered wheels is awesome :)

I've been thinking about an LSD for a while now. I was going to go with the B&M as we've had some pretty good reviews. I am not willing to sacrifice any cornering or turning ability. I want to be able to put the power down through the turns without lighting up the inside tire. I barely do any drag racing, so if the Quaife is worth it I'll go pimp my women out to get one... just kiddin' honey :p

This right here says you want a Quaife. I haven't had mine in the rain yet though but I'm quite sure it will be better.

Quadcylla, thanks man. Yeah I guess there is no substitute for the real thing. Looks like I'll have to raid the piggy bank :)

I've read some posts before where they said the quaife is a bit strong on the stock trannies, causing damage to some. Any insights or experience with this? Even Howell told me to get phantom grip over quaife. If he sells both, why would he do this?

Most of the reports of Quaife failures are from their center diff in the AWD cars. The Quaife front diff is stronger than stock. The PG and B+M inserts do not strengthen the stock diff.

Do you have a turbo or RS.The nt has weaker trannies and may not be able to handle the added stress. If you goto quaife's webpage it talks about how they are not covering broken center diff's for free because of a design in the turbo awd transmissions causes them to break before the tranny.

I have both. :) The nt tranny is weaker? How do I strengthen this tranny, TRE or BM dont make racing trannies for 420a. so should I use phantom grip for that one , and save up for quaife for the gsx?
I heard Kaaz is better recently though...:(

Cornering wet...

Well, this isn't race or enthusiast oriented, but it should give you an idea of cornering when wet...

There is a grocery store parking lot near my house that is set up just right to make a FWD spin as you exit. The right turn is on a slight hill, and if it's wet, you have to baby it to avoid spinning. It's not even difficult to spin when it's dry. In the past I would just deal with the spin to get into traffic at a reasonable rate. It was assumed I would break traction every time.

Then I got the Quaife installed...

The first time I was there after the install, I went to make my turn not thinking twice about having a new differential. I assumed I would spin, as always. Well, you know what happens when you assume. You whip your neck from side to side as your car whips around the corner. It was actually a bit scary, to be honest. I wasn't expecting that to happen.

ok cool
Is it worth putting in a lsd in a gsx?
preferably Kaaz (500 bucks)
Is it worth it putting an LSD in a 1g gsx?
Look Kid, you posted the same question in the space of 4 hours. There's a forum for questions like this: newbies

Try to keep the "Quaife LSD on FWD" review on topic.

I will however make this a constructive smack down. Here is a list of search results for "quaife" and "awd" -> Click Here!

Thanks to everyone for their reviews on this part. I've been interested in one of these for quite some time now. Keep them coming.

yes but not a kazz.......imo.It is not going to transfer power as efficiently in cornering as a quaife. Also kazz does not make a center diff that I am aware of.If you want straightline dry weather advantages then get the kazz.If you want quality that will give you good straightline,cornering,wet/dry/frozen weather then get the quaife.

Kaaz
First, this is a review about a Quaife LSD on a FWD car. If you want to discuss other parts or other cars, it belongs in Parts Talk, in a thread that pertains to it... not here.

But since you're here, I'll answer the question. Screw Kaaz. I don't know how many of those cheapshit diffs I've seen break. If you're gonna bother with an aftermarket diff, pony up the cash to get a Quaife, or don't waste your time.

Lol:p Thanks, Sorry didnt realize I posted that twice so soon! Had to make a quick decision. I was interested in fwd too cause I have one , its just that I also wanted to see if anyone heard of Kaaz and what they think, because I was thinking of getting that for the fwd too.
but now I guess not.
