Getting ready to rebuild head and was wondering about doing the pistons. With the head off and oil pan dropped, can I just take off the rod main bolts and just pull the piston up from the block? Sorry, I searched and couldn't find ANYTHING on the subject.

It's just as easy with it in. The problem comes if the cylinder needs to be over bored. You can hone it out with the block in, but you have to take extra precautions to make sure NO metal shavings, chips, etc drop into the crankcase.

Honing is just to put a new crosshatch on an otherwise perfectly fine cylinder.

You have mechanical damage to the cylinder, so it needs to be bored.

thanks aaron.. the walls looks about perfectly fine and smooth .. except some slight sludges that needs to be sanded/honed off to smooth.

so i guess i wont have to bore.. anyone else dont agree or agree?

cylinder walls shoulndt' be perfectly smooth because then oil is not sticking to the sides of the walls....if they are TOO smooth i think over time with oil not staying to them they will wear to an oval shape, which they will need bored,.
