Now, where should I start.
Saturday night, hanging out at a local dunkin donuts, nothing to do. Crowd starts rolling in. Viper rolls in. Wow. Black viper, huge wheels (335s), silver dual stripes. TnT 605 (605hp). Very trick looking, almost like a space alien.
Anywho, word gets around, and suddenly I'm invited for a race between "mini" and IT. So, we gather up our stuff, and head out to the highway.
After doing a test pull on the first highway, our pulls get cut short buy slow traffic up ahead. No problem. We then gather back together for some chit chat, and decide to head it up hard on another highway.
So we are cruising to the right spot to gun it. Me vs. the Viper, 40mph to 160mph.
Before I continue, just a little info. I had just put in 94 octane, and am running yet another AGP 50trim invention of theirs (not the 458whp unit I had a bit ago). I am pushing about 27psi, and the weather is getting cooler. The Viper was running well, the driver himself was such a cool guy that I was not nervous at all. It made the race feel more like a fun test, rather than a brag all.
So, here we are, lined up doing about 40mph. I am in my prime for boost in 2nd gear, and he is pacing me on my left, waiting for my turbo to start hissing for him to hit the gas. Behind us are a few cars, including Greg/Homer filming, an Evo8 (filming) and a few other cars spectating.
So, the time is right. I gun it. Immediate boost, car takes off like a rocket, I don't see the road ahead of me. Viper? He does a little shaky-shake and looses a car. I quickly shift the mojo stick into 3rd, but I must have taken too long as the mojo was not there baby... she lagged too much into full boost in 3rd. By the time I had 27psi, the Viper (which power shifted) was a car ahead of me. Ok, great, now I'm going to see this guy's tails for the rest of the pull. Screw it. I keep at it.
3rd runs out of juice in a heartbeat, and I shift her into 4th with vengence. Crap, more lag. This is great. But, whats this? I had gained mabye a tiny bit in 3rd! Well, the Viper must have shifted since he somehow retained that lead from before. So now I'm pullin in 4th, and before I know it, I'm done at 7500rpm, and all I see is Viper Door and hood. My front tires are even with his rear.
She gets slapped silly into 5th, and the mayhem continues. As little 4cyl that could keeps chuggin, I keep watching two main things. My MPH, and the Viper. "140... he's not pulling on me... 150... he's not pulling on me.. 155. OMG my engine is gonna blow!" Ok, well, it didn't. I soon hit 160 with fury, and all I can see is that there is no end. I'm at 7000rpm, thinking: "Should I goto 8000rpm and try for 170mph, or quit now while i'm still in the same spot with him as 2 gears ago?". I do what any worried dsmer would do, hit the breaks. Hell, he as one more gear to go! I wasn't born yesterday you know.
At that point, it was quite obvious that he was not pulling on me, and I was not pulling on him. My power band continues at 458 (or whatever HP i had today with this new turbo) till 7500rpm and pulling, so I could have kept at it, and hoped he'd shift into 6th and I'de gain a bit right there. But nah, don't want to chance it.
So, we evently get to a stop, and chat. All was agreed, dead tie power wise. Super cool guy thought, and in the end, we all gawked at the Viper, who cares about "mini"
Come to think of it, if he's pushing TnT's claimed 605bhp, thats probably 500whp lets say. I'm 40 (or maybe less) whp shy. Give my weight advantage of 3220 (w/me in it) vs his maybe 3400 or 3500, add some gearing, and things probably were supposed to work out this way.
Great thing is, the little awd 4cyl just proved tonight that it could hang with one of these beasts on top end, without a hitch. Drove her home, parked it, and wrote this story. Hope you enjoyed.
