I just sold my 90 fwd Eclipse turbo with 150k and purchased a 91 AWD Talon with 78k. My problem is in the turbo on my new Talon. The guage shoots up to 14 very quickly and I cannot feel the boost nearly as much, almost at all compared to my Eclipse, seems that it is going straight through the blow off valve, you can still hear it spool up and whistle. I just put on a new K+N, mobil 1 synthetic oil change, NGK's, ran only premium fual. I took it to Mitsu to get the timing belt done because I am at school and could not do it myself. I asked them to diagnose the turbo also. I get a call today saying the timing is done and that the tech/mechanic drove it and said the turbo was fine?????? How can this be??? I know for a fact that it isn't right. Any ideas?

I think theres another post about that problem. I don't know if its the same though. You may want to check all your hoses. The other posts says its most likely leaking boost. Check all your hoses and make sure they're secure, particulary under the intake piping, turbo, and intercooler. I'm gonna do the same to mine as soon as I get a chance.

the stock Boost gauge is worth less it does nothing more then read a MAS input signal amd says that it SHOULD be making this amount of boost. so it really isn't a boost gauge to the TRUE operation of one. Now Like ray said above check all the pipes POST turbo to the TB. they need to be tight and if any clamps seem weak or bending replace them.
Second have that T belt checked. power loss after a T belt if a SURE sign of a job done wrong. Have a DSM Guru check it for you if your not 100% sure it's correct.

Satan ( dealer ) knows next to nothing so don't take his word for it.

There is a test for the BOV to see when it open have it done to be sure it is working right.

Don't compare a FED to a AWD. the FWD will FEEL to get up faster B/C the lack of traction and will have ( stock Vs. stock ) more top end. seat of the pants feel can be VERY misleading.

have a shop hook up a boost gauge for a test or get one for your self so you know that it is making that power. A STOCK car will make 9-11PSI with NO MODS

Good Luck

I'm sure it isn't boosting right. You can not hold it at WOT for more than a couple of seconds then it starts hesitating. I have to down shift going up hills in the Talon, never had to in the Eclipse, the turbo kicked in and did the job, so I know it isn't just feel. In the eclipse I could get up to @25 mph in first with normal shifting at @4500 rpm, the Talon only gets up to about 17 mph in first pressing it pretty hard. I'm going to check all the lines today, hopefully that is it.

How old is the fuel filter? I changed mine after I bought my car because it is the least likely maintainence job to be performed.
1) Banjo bolt is a b!*ch to get off.
2) It looks like the liberty bell painted black, not too noticable.

You said you you changed your plugs but what about the wires??? How old are they. And did you propperly gap the plugs? In your case I think they should be gapped at something like 0.035~0.032" (someone back me up here). That gap is at stock boost levels and up to 15psi and I would pray to all that's holy that you haven't tried increasing your boost beyond that without a REAL boost gauge! ( ;)). You could be getting that hesitation from impropperly gapped plugs, bad wires, or you ignition coil may be dying. Many problems can be solve by fixing/looking at your spark plugs. Check the vfaq's for the specs on the coil. You need a voltmeter to check, if you can't find the readings to compare you're values to let me know, I'll look them up in my shop manual.

Hope this helps,

Ok, I just picked it up from the dealer, $497.88 later I can feel it pulling more, but now it is over boosting and cutting out. It goes up too rapidly then pegs out at 14 psi, much quicker than my 90, which only went to 11 psi peaking out, then I assume the turbo is bypassed and no pressure is coming through, the car jolts. I HATE THIS THING!! Who would have thought a one lady owner car would be such a pain in the *ss!! Someone please help!!!

You only have a stock boost gauge? Hitting 14psi on stock gauge could be hitting 30psi in real life. DO NOT boost it. The dealer could have F*#%ed it up. Check the wastegate, is there a vacuum tube on it???? (wastegate is that brass looking thing on the side of the turbo). That jolt you feel might be fuel cut. (too much air, ECU can't supply enought fuel so it cuts the fuel to limit the boost). Fuel cut happens when you have a boost controller set too high or no controller at all. You might want them to check the Boost Controll Solenoid to see if it is working(cylinder think ontop on the airbox).

Tell me if this helps,
Zach

It's not fuel cut, it's not that dramatic, It just feels like you loose any of the boost that may have been built up. It also happens when I let off the gas, It just feels like you lose @20 hp instantly, almost like a skip?

How do you check the wastegate?

When I said check the wastegate, i meant to see if the vacuum line was still attached. if it wasn't you can't stop the incresing boost and eventually you would hit fuel cut.

hmmm...you're not getting any engine codes (check engine light)? And you've checked all your intake hoses for cracks, hose clamps on tight, seals leaking? Do you hear any noises when this happens? Hisses, bangs, ect... Maybe you BOV is broken and leaks big time once you reach full boost. Or there is a big leak in the exhaust track???

Still thinking,

Ok, there is no check engine light, I checked most of the tubes and hoses, all connected, the only one I have not yet checked is the one under the car connected to the intercooler. I was going up a long bridge today in 5th and the turbo started kicking in and I was loosing power, so I let off of the gas so the boost was at 0 and was accellerating again, not too much of a power loss, but you could feel it, so I started to get on the turbo a little again and could feel the power drain again, I am so confused. What do you think about a bad wastegate selenoid contributing to the overboost? all of the vacuum hoses are connected to it and I believe do not leak. The only noise I can hear is the normal turbo spooling sssss. I don't even know where to take it to have anyone who knows what they are doing to look at it. Tomorrow I am going to buy some new BPR6's and some new Accell wires. Should have kept my 155k mile Eclipse!!!!!!!!!!
