i have 18's with 235/40/18 ires and i have enough sidewall that the ride is fine. potholes only scare me because my car is dropped 2" with springs and a big enough bump cause the tire to come up and hit the front fender.... otehr than that my sidewall is great. 2g = 18's, 1g=17's

I wish i had found this thread earlier. You guys are making me regret purchasing the 18's i just bought for my 1G. They are pretty bad wheels though, they are going to look huge on my car like chris_germany's. Funny you guys were talking about the ssr's (sweetest wheels ever) my wheels are pretty much copies of those. ADR RS Limited Ricochets-Gunmetal W/ chrome lip.
i got a set of 215/35/18 z rated wanli's to go with them. the rims have a 42 offset so i should be allright, right?

i wasnt too concerned about weight because i have a set of 16's w/ drag radials, but does anyone know what these things weigh in at? 18x7.5's

17s will be slightly faster. They will be less prone to damage due to imperfect road surfaces (I have hit nasty potholes at speed with no damage). 17s will be cheaper.

18s will handle better. 18s look really good.

One more thing to note. If you get 17s that are wider than 18s, you can negate the handling advantage 18s have by getting wider tires. Even a wider wheel with the same width tire will improve handling.

BS. The 18s will not handle any better than 17's. You don't ride on wheels, but on tires. And before someone comes up with the "shorter sidewall" crap, look at Formula 1 and other race cars wheels and tires.

i know what you guys are saying but i got a set of brand new tires for my new 18's off ebay for 379 shipped. I dont think thats too bad. Though it will be tough to find someone to mount them on the rims.

Tires Plus?

i dont have one of those around me, i dont have anything around me for that matter. i can find somewhere im sure, just it will be a hike and they will want an arm and a leg to do it.

Where are you from in CT? They have midas in Hartford, New Haven, Stratford, Hamden, and Brandford. They probably would swap rims.

I've been looking at rims for my 90 TSi. I like the Rota Subzeros because they're cheap, light, and look pretty good, at least to me.

But my problem is I don't know which backspacing is stock, 48mm or 45mm? I know 45mm makes my stance wider, so I might just get those, but maybe I'm wrong, let me know.

Also, the subzero 17s are only available in 17x7.5. Is that going to be wide enough or will I wish I got 17x8s?

Thanks,
Jon

If you're going with much wider than stock rims, you can't run the stock off-set (unless you want the tires rub against the struts and shocks). !7x7.5" rims with 40-42mm off-set will do just fine.
