Just wanted to post this, because it's not often that I hear of a DSM losing, and the victor in this case was a pretty special MR2. Not your typical motor swap in a Honda type thing.

Cars:
94 Eclipse GS
swapped 6 bolt
16G
starion FMIC
running 14psi

93 MR2
horrible suspension and brakes
gen IV 3SGTE engine (2.0L, CT26 turbo)

After just finishing up a pretty difficult swap on my buddy's MR2 we decided to go for a drive. The car was relatively untuned, though we were keeping our eyes on the boost level, nothing else was really monitored.

Another friend decided to join us with his FWD 1G that is currently using my old 16G turbo and a 'custom' starion fmic. It's got more stuff done, like a full body kit, cat back, and intake, but that's the important part at least. He thought the car was having ignition problems, but I think it's just that the increased boost from the 16G is blowing out his spark in the upper RPM's, since he couldn't tell me which spark plugs he was using or what they were gapped at.

Anyways.... on the highway from a 50mph roll the MR2 pulled out a little on the DSM consistently.

Now granted, the DSM was having a little problem with spark, but the MR2 wasn't even tuned _at_all_, and I spent a decent amount of time in the DSM getting things as much in check as I could with the stock 450's, low boost on a 16G, no AFPR, and an SAFC.

I was pretty surprised by the results to tell you guys the truth. I thought the DSM would pull easily, but I guess FWD's aren't the highway kings I thought they would be. Honestly, if both of these cars were tuned properly (read, if I owned them both) I think the MR2 would still have won.

I'll be attending the dyno tomorrow with the FWD, so I'll have some hard numbers for you guys if you're interested.

That's hard to say considering you don't know what the potential of each car is since neither are tuned right. Don't you think? jk. DSM'S always win, unless they're me.:p I love mr2's cause you can launch the piss out of them.

That FWD is not tuned right

I had a live encounter with a Nice looking MR2(search it) and KILLED IT DEAD!!!. With a starion Front Mount and the S-AFC settings right he could easily run 16-17 psi. Now a 3rd gear pull at 3800rpm on a FWD 16g equipped is amazing(trust me I KNOW!!!). The only thing is 14psi is low for a FMI, I can understand being conservative with a side mount but....a FMI ??? The 16g is happier at 17psi:D

yeah, these two guys are all about races. I can arrange something for you with either car Nomie. Or just meet up with them at the Sept 21 drags at Cordova, they should both be there if I have any say in it.

True, both cars weren't tuned well at all, but I stated that. But I got to ride in that MR2 again last night and it is damn impressive. Then again, it's the same thing when I ride in that FWD.

Update on the dyno for the FWD DSM. He didn't end up going to the dyno, but did get a set of 550's that we'll be tuning it to tonight. I agree, he could have been running higher boost, but safety is the first rule and now I'm confident we can get the thing tuned quite nicely at a much higher boost level.

I ran up to 16psi on .044" gapped Champions with no blow-out. He's probably just slow ;).

And, isn't a CT26 out of a MKIII :dunno:

other team and back, then back again

MR2's aren't slow in the right hands. Most do mid-high 13's with intake/exhaust/mbc, just like most DSMs.

I have had a half dozen DSMs, then I bought an MR-2 Turbo. Given mine had a 20G and 550's, but it did go 12.8@114mph on pump gas. Intercoolers SUCK for MR-2s.. you can only go so big on a sidemount and trunk mounts are just super pricey.

Anyway, I'm building a 6-bolt 95 (soon.. my 1G baby will live on! muahaha), but I eventually will buy another MR-2 Turbo (a drunk wrecked the above car). Never have I driven a more perfect "drivers car."

my $0.02

That FWD threw down 237 hp and 258 tq on the dyno the other day. I wasn't there to tune the car, but they said they were still having ignition problems in the upper RPM's. Again, this is a car with 550's, 16G, 3" downpipe (stock catback [I've told him a thousand times....]), and a starion fmic.

Again, I asked my friend if he had at least bothered to check or replace his spark plugs before the dyno and he hadn't. I don't understand why you'd pay for a dyno session when the car isn't running top shape. He was even using 91 octane (around here we can get 93 or even race gas easily), sometimes this kid just doesn't make any sense to me.

I cant speak for the DSM but I know a properly tuned MR2 with just basic mods can easily run low 13's. I actually just sold mine and may eventually buy another just to slap on a huge turbo like my old setup GT35R and run it till it blows on a stock block.

The one thing I liked about the MR2 was IMO is a total sleeper. I used to get all kinds of people trying to race me until they heard a BOV and the ones that did...well it only took less than 1/4 mile to wreck their ego :D

wow, that car is amazing. nicely done man. I don't see how that could possibly be a sleeper with the amount of work you've put into it, but I guess we can never underestimate the stupidity of the uninformed.

The Gen IV shouldn't have a Turbo at all....vvti 3SGE is the Gen IV...must be a Gen III...which SHOULD have the CT20b but yeah....hard for you US fellas to get so he probably took the hit and got a CT26 :(

A Stock Gen III J-spec should be good for mid-high 13's, some mild mods and 12's easy :)

Cheers

Mr2's are fast...
One of my best friends has a 91 mr2 turbo and launches mad crazy.... its stock except for suspension mods and he hit 14.5s consistantly at the tracks and 15.3s for me... he dusted me pretty well when i was stock by like 4ish cars....

but the other day (after i got a t28killer w/fuel and after he bought his greddy exhaust, intake & short shifter), we had a friendly run on an empty road...

I got him at launch and all the way home....
1st run = 4.5 cars ahead
2nd run = 2.5 cars ahead but ended at 90mph

it was true all along, the t25 sucks....
P.S. : i'm auto with a stock slipping tranny @ 1bar of boost
can't wait til the day i get my high stall tq converter
