I just bought a 92 Talon TSi AWD and when I had it checked out before I bought it the mechanic said the oil pan leaks a little bit and will need the gasket replaced. Will I be better off taking the car to a shop to have this done? I have a jack and jack stands, and I've taken the oil pan off of a 351w from a Mustang before, but I don't know if this will be anything like it....what do you guys think? Will it be simple and straightforward? Thanks.

AWD cars have to remove transfer case + downpipe + one crossmember to get the oil pan off. It's not *that* bad if you're used to working on these cars.

The dealer sells an oil pan gasket, but the cars were put together with grey RTV at the factory. That's what I use to seal em. :dunno:

If you decide to do it your self, the correct RTV is the Permatex Ultra Gray. Make sure to clean all the old RTV off both the pan and the block, then clean them with carb cleaner to remove any oil. Follow the instructions on the RTV and remember that there are a two shorter bolts that go up front. Putting the longer bolts in will cut up your timing belt.
The manual also shows to run the bead of RTV on the inside (oil sump side) of any bolt holes, not outside by the edge of the pan.

You may need to loosen the bolts to the center bearing bracket for the drivers side drive shaft to move it out of the way of the pan bolts.
