hey, I'm not sure what type of smell that is but it happens when:

- there is a big hill, going about 50mph on 5th gear (low RPMs, I can hear the nice turbo spooling louder, and get about 12psi, but after a while I can smell exhaust fumes?(or something like that),
I have test-pipe - no cat at this time.

what kind of smell can it be? and is good/safe to run at such low rpms at this speed while hearing the turbo spool pretty loud?

The scenario of being in 5th gear and going up a hill makes me think it may be the clutch going bad. Do the RPMs raise like it is in neutral? Also, a burning clutch has a very distinctive smell.
 
Yeah Im gonna go with the genarl concensous(sp) and say clutch. I had the same senario about a month ago where under wierd load conditions (IE: Long hills/high gears) i got this wrank smell. It would come and go, but over time it got worse and worse, at 1st It just smelled bad and i didnt really notice any RPM changes. But as time went on I started noticing issues with accelerating from a high speeds (95+) the car really just didnt do anything but rev higher, taking off was good top of 2nd would slip here and there and that just verified my orginal thoughts. my clutch was toast.

hey, nah... RPMs do not climp up with "no power". Clutch to me looks like it's great.

The thing is that if I go uphill on 5th, I can switch gear to 4th and drive, then turbo spools less and I don't hear the turbo spool that loud, and then I don't get that much smell.

Ahh it's hard to describe, but I heard it has to do with the LOAD :confused:

p.s. I changed fuel filter yesterday for a brand new one and now my Apexi TT 02 readings show even LEANER! .2-.1V at 3KRPM on 3rd, 4th, 5th gear, that is weird.

how can readings be leaner after new fuel filter is put on?
 
I get the same thing. I never had it till I cranked up the boost a bit with a MBC. I can tell it's a slightly rich exhasut smell. I really can smell it when the sun roof is open, but I also get a hint with everything closed. It only happens at high-way speeds.

Personally, I think it's from when the motor goes a bit rich under higher boost. The back side of a 2g is big and flat, which causes a bit of an aerodynamic bubble at high-way speeds which might cause some of the richer exhast to float in. It's kinda like when you see a car on the highway that is burning so rich it causes carbon build-up on the bumper, ever notice how it rises up the back side of the car? from that bubble that forms back there at higher speeds...

Otherwise, my exhaust isn't leaky and my clutch is definitely fine. I know the smell of burning clutch very well and that's not it. This smell is a definitely a slightly rich smell, which makes sense under higher boost. I think the back-end aerodynamics of the car let some of it into the cabin.

oh yeah, there is a spot on the rear bumper where I would say is a black carbon build-up (it actually turns into yellow paint (from heat) - reason - well, probably because the HKS exhaust is angled that way, but that doesn't bother me at all. I'll get it painted and fixed one day. I also think you'd get more of that build up with no cat (test pipe), just like I have

I'm starting to think that maybe my car is running very rich, but my Apexi TT 02 readings show as lean as .1V, maybe due to 02 sensor bad? I just don't know.

I can't tell unless I get that datalogger, but for 2G it's just so expensive, damn.

If you are talking about during WOT, then yes there is something wrong.

You think that may be it? I drove today on 5th gear going 60mph, then WOT and the Apexi TT instantly showed .03V! :eek:

Then if I do the same thing a little while later, it first goes up to .80V and then instant drop even at 3kRPM. :confused:

When you go WOT it should be pegged at a steady number somewhere in the high .80's or .90's. Go try it again sometime today at WOT and this time let the car run higher than 4000RPM, hell, run it to redline (not in 5th gear of course :) ) and then come back and tell us what it does.

hey, I did a little test today, at WOT on 5th gear, had about 14psi, 3.4Krmp, the 02V dropeed from .8V quick to .2V and stays there. BUT, I do feel the power and the car pulls.

However, would bad alternator have something to do with it?
My headlights, domelights, etc. are all simultaneously blinking for maybe a minute, then it's fine for 10minutes, then again. Also, the battery voltage fluctuated when this hapens, but sometimes it stays 14V steady for even 15minutes. One timeit was find for the whole day. Today, while driving in the morning, the Apexi TT battery voltage showed 11.5V and everything was pretty dim, then after 1/2h of driving, while idling, the battery voltage just jumped up all of a sudded lights were all bright and 14.2V on the battery.

p.s. When I measured the voltage of the battery while the car idles, measuring directly from battery, it'll show 14.2V but the Apexi TT shows 13.8V :confused:

why can't everything just simply "work" :mad:
