Heeeyyy buddy. Just so happened, I put an EVO III (ported) exhaust manifold on my DSM. I have a bigger turbo but it made a pretty big difference. Opening up the exhaust in any way helps. Try to do it all in one shot though. Couldn't tell you how many times I tore mine apart. I ported the turbo inlet while I was at it too. Made it nice and smoooooth. If you buy the EVO III manifold, pay the money to have it ported, it's worth it.(unless you plan on doin that yourself) I have some pics comparing the two side by side somewhere around here. If I find them, I will let you know.

I am not sure about how much porting you can do on the stock manifold, but look at it this way, the evoIII is bigger without porting. Also, if you port out the stock one, the more you port, the less material you have wich will cause alot more heat in your engine bay. Also may cause cracking. The odds of this happening are slim I'm sure, but I wouldn't want to take any chances. Plus it's cool tellin people you have an EVOIII manifold:)
If it's money your trying to save, just be sure that you undestand that you get what you pay for and paying for it more than once sucks. I couldn't tell you how many times I've done that already.
