I recently helped a friend of mine pull his old engine in his '91 gsx and put a new one in. When we were reconnecting the shift cables to the tranny we noticed the rubber bushings came out of the ends of the cable... unfortunately he's broke. So we managed to get the bushings back into the ends of the cables and then we used some washers and some jb weld to secure the ends of the cables onto the tranny. I know this is seriously rigged but its only temporary until he gets the cash to properl fix it. Anyway, there is a small problem. He only has 3rd and 4th gear... it won't go into 1st,2nd,5th or reverse. I figure its something with the cable but we don't know what. Could the cables have been put on the wrong shift arm things by accident? or is there just something wrong with the cables all together that its not shifting the car into gear properly. Please don't flame. We've never done anything like this to any car before and i think we did a pretty damn good job for the first time. The car runs, and it moves... even if it only has two gears. heh.

Did you install the same tranny? This problem typically occurs when people install a '91 or later trans into a '90 or vice versa. You need to swap shifter cables, the shifter cable bracket and the shifter as well.

BTW - use some skate board wheel bearings to replace those junk rubber BS bushings at the cable ends. It might just be that the cable isn't able to push the selector arm into or out of the middle range. Notice 3rd and 4th are right in the middle? The range selector arm needs to be able to move the complete range to be able to hit 1st & 2nd and 5th & Rev. You can get some cheap abec3 bearings at Walmart. They should press right into the cable ends and the car will shift better. ;)

That is a seriously genius idea. In all my years of dsming I have never heard of using skateboard/rollerblade bearings on the shift cable ends! I have some abec 5's I never use anymore! Did you think this up Van? Are you the guy I should attribute this find to? Just wondering for when I tell the others of my find.:D
