Hello. I just got my first oil change for my car and found out after the fact that they put on a Fram oil filter. I had asked for something else, but they told me (again, after the fact) that they only carried one kind of filter. I think that I can just take off the filter and put another one on. Is that right? And will having the Fram filter hurt anything if I leave it? I am trying to keep everything as clean as possible to avoid any stuck oil squirters. I had them use Mobil1 oil. If I need to change the filter, what should I replace it with?

the Fram filter is crappy.. but won't hurt anything. They tend to perform much poorer that the other brands.. and I actually noticed less lifter tick when swiching away from them. Purolator or an OEM mitsu filter are good choices.

i realize (and did before having the oil changed) that the filter is not one that i would opt for. i was just wondering if it would be worth the effort to taking off the filter with oil in the car, and putting a new one in, and having to top off the car with another quart or so. i guess thats what i am going to do though.

I don't see that it'd be worth it. I myself don't use fram on the Talon's or T/A but on my Beretta I've almost always used them. I ran a diagnostic on the Beretta at 130K miles at Snap-On and it showed between 95% & 100% factory compression in all 6 cylinders. Since I read the site on the filter comparison I've switched all cars to Wix. But after seeing the comp numbers on the beretta I've gotta say don't bother taking your filter off just because it's a fram. Wait till the next change.

Fram isn't very good of a filter compared to most, but won't hurt anything in the short run. I always use PuroLater's PureOne, it is the same filtering quality (little less surface area though) as Mobil1's filter with half the price (~$4 for PureOne @ Advanced or $10 for Mobil @ AutoZone). Another good filter is AmsOil, but that is typically by order only.

If you are a 2g owner...get a Mobil 1 M105 filter. It's the size for the 1g...which is nearly double the size of the stock 2g size filter. You can find them most easily at KMART. As far as performance gains...I doubt there are much if any...but a larger filter can't hurt.

Fram's suck. I used to use Bosch on my last oil change I bought a high dollar Mobil 1...pretty $$$. But I don't plan to change it for 7,000 miles.

If you are interested in an Amsoil filter, I can get them for you. They will last longer than the other filters mentioned, but this also depends on what oil you are using. If you are changing after 3000 miles, may as well go with one of the other filters. Fram doesn't filter very well in comparison to other brands, like Amsoil, Mobil 1, Pure 1, Hastings, etc. It won't harm your car running it for the short haul, but you won't be filtering out as many smaller contaminants that also cause wear.

Here are the two links to two other forums that discussed some of the differences between filters:

I read that the OEM filter is one of the "better" filters since it has 2 chambers or somehting like that for double filtration. I just recently went back to the OEM filters ,since they are a bit cheaper too ~$5, about 6 mo ago. After 3 oil changes everything seems ok. Also i DO NOT use Mobil 1 oil since it doesnt have all the necessary lubricants (and minerals like zinc) required for long life. My $000,000,000.02
