5-speed

personally i would hold out for a 5-speed model. you'll thank me if you do the same ;)

Ok, but are they prone to breaking or anything?
autos are ok untill you start making power(over 250whp) then they wear out frequently, meaning they start slipping just like a worn clutch. last year extreme experimented with a <heavily modded> auto and it lasted about a week and they had nothing good to say about it. also from personal experiance a auto tranny car with the same mods as a 5-speed car is quit a bit slower, at the track and on the streets.
even if the car had 5 miles on it i would pass the auto tranny up. keep looking, you will find a nice low mileage, 5-speed, awd dsm. my 95 talon had 28k pampered miles on it when i bought it

The A/T tranny will hold up to 300HP in stock form. if you put a shift kit in($75) then it can handle anything that a 16G can put out. Of course an upgraded TC would help some too. But don't look down on the A/T tranny. They are actually less likely to get Crankwalk(I believe there have only been two cases) and they don't break s much as an M/T does. Not flaming M/T's, just stating the facts.

P.S. There are some A/T's with a TC and Shift kit upgrade and all the same mods as a M/T would have for a Big 16G and it is running 12.01 at the track.

Hmmm, 97GSTAT has me thinking. Well this is going to be a first car, Im 16, and I want a car that can be made pretty fast, and will be reliable, I wont be putting a ton of mods onto this car, Ill be paying for my insurance, I live in NJ. And I really like the thought of AWD. Anyone else have anything else tp put in?

if you want to have fun on the streets, i would haev to agree with 4npower. wait for the 5speed. if you dont care and jsut want a reliable car, then the auto will do also. auto is also ok for drag racing but if you want to street race or do anykind of autocross, then you REALLY want to wait for a 5speed. im telling you from experience. i have 3 cars. one auto and two with m/t. i hardly ever drive the auto now becuase the m/t just give you so much more control, not to mention fun to drive. if you jsut want a car and dont care to go all our and race, then the auto is good. but then again, if you want to go all out, EXPECT things to brake. they always do, eso with the dsm trannies. ive gone through 2 in less than 7 months. you being 16 and just getting into this, just think and spend wisely, esp if it is your first and only car. you dont want to brake it and have to spend money to fix it. dont mean to be sounding like your father and all...just a word of advice.

Avoid automatic DSMS.

I made the mistake of buying one when I was 16 :D, and had to do a lot of dam work to stop the automatics from breaking. I went through 2 auto trannies, and the ultimite solution was converting my car to a 5-spd. :D

Im not putting big mods on...

Im not going to, or at least planning to, put any big mods on, Ill I plan to do mechanically is an FIPK, and an exhaust, and a shift kit. I think the transmission would be fine then. Right? Other than that, all Ill probably end up doing is putting in a nice sound system. Thanks for the replies so far.

Also, I really dont plan on drag racing that much, if it is, itll only be once or twice. No road racing either. This will be for driving myself to school and work mainly.

If that's all your going to do then your fine with the tranny in stock form. You don't need to get the shift kit, if you don't want to. I myself am planning on doing a mild mod job on this car, and get a 1G AWD A/T and make it a full drag car. This car I have now is my daily driver and I've had no problems with my setup. Anyways Good Luck on whatever you do.

theres no such thing as im not doing any major mods

this is how it all starts. yeah, i just need a car. ill strap some rims on there and make it look nice, and maybe an exhasut and intake to give it some extra umph. NOT! thats what we all say, then once we feel the power theres no turning back. i have a 240sx and when i first got it, all i was going to do is put an exhaust, intake and rims. well, then came the pulleys, ignition, cat, etc, and now silvia engine, running 11s. then i got my 90 gsx, ok ill just put an intake, downpipe and exhaust. not, now it has 16g, ported, avcr, etc, then i said ill get a 91 to drive around. now the 91 has fmi, fuel pump, cams, injectors, all kinds of other stuff. totalling over 20gs in mods. saying that you arent going to really do anything to the car is not reliable. im not calling you a liar but its VERYhard. also when a honda boy pulls on you in the streets, i guarantee you that you will start to mod your car. i did.
3 cars in my garage and not one close to stock. just my 2 cents

thanks rollhard, now i don't have to write up my own long post about getting the "bug" :D

daveb, do want you want, but i'm telling you your gonna rip that auto apart and hate life if you buy it. do this, call extreme motorsports and talk with sean glazer about it. extreme is probably the only tuner shop to actually consider/get serious about using the auto dsm tranny. they got brent rau to go 9.18 with a auto so they must know a thing or two about it. granted that auto tranny probably cost more then what your gonna pay for the entire car, but hey, i'm giving you hope here :D

Well I checked out the car today...

And it was pretty nice. I really wont have the funds to put anything major into the car, and I really want to put a nice sound system into it, so thatl cost a bit. Thanks for all the posts though. Ill have to take a test drive soon. BTW, what was the hp rating for a 95 auto?

it doesnt matter what the hp rating for the 95 auto is. the fact that it is an awd, already you are at a weight disadvantage, then it is an auto, so your losing power to the tranny, more so than a manual car. just remember not to rush when it comes to buying a car. take your time and look around. what seems good, might not always be good. ive had my share of nightmares.
