After searching and finding no definative answer, does anyone know whether all 1G auto's came with a 13g or did some have the 14b as the OEM turbo?

Take off the turbo inlet pipe. A 13g will hav staggered blads and a 14b will hav evenly spaced blades. Th 14b has a larger exhaust housing as well, 6cm instead of five, but I doubt youll be able to tell while its on the car....just chck th compressor wheel.

Thanks again for the info.

I've finally got the new tranny and rear diff in my posession, so it's just a matter of time before the car is on the road now... I'm just looking forward to the next upgrades :)

OK, get a shift kit! Or do you hav on already. Thats my advice for th a/t guys
Going to probably order it this week, that and the end clutch kit.

GL with the car
Thanks!

A 13G has a TDO4 housing
That should be easy enough to verify then, appreciate it.

I want to also add a big thankyou to this forum and moderators, I've learned a heck of a lot between here and vfaq / dsm.org Probably one of the most useful website combos on the web IMO.

WHY would they have smaller trubos on the a/t, do whey want want it to run worse then the m/t?
Is the injecters different to?
Auto cars spool turbos far slower...thy wanted better response....they have 390 cc injctors instead of 450's and worse cams

Your on crack, lol....th base higher fuel pressure would cause a loss in prformanc because it maks the car run richer if anything, but it really dosnt affct it. Th amp also does not affect it. 180hp vs 195hp....its because.....no rgualr pdstrian wants to driv a turbo car that spools sloooowwwwwww.....so thy put a smallr turbo on.

A friend and I were discussing this exact issue last week; our theory for the smaller injectors, different cam tuning and smaller turbo was that by adding smaller performance mods, you increase fuel effeciency. Auto transmissions inherantly make worse mileage galon for galon, so by adding less performance mods, there is less engine strain, thereby increasing economy. This would let the manufacturer keep roughly the same economy specs on both cars, whereas if both manual and autos had the same mods, the mileage estimates would be at a much larger discrepancy.

Any thoughts to this? Am I totally off?

The 1G autos have smaller turbos for better initial response and spool up. I'm not sure gas mileage had a part in it but mostly it was due to getting rid of lag.

This is the same basic reason 2Gs came stock with the tiny T-25. Mitsubishi thought "average" customers didn't want to deal with the lag so they put a fast spooling stock turbo. And for the 3G, they totally got rid of lag with a NA V6.

Yeah and if you buy an automatic sports car, maybe performance isn't first on your list anyway
I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. My roommate, for instance, just bought an '02 WS6 auto; because he doesn't know how to drive manual, but he bought that model firebird b/c of it's performance. I bought the auto TSI b/c I got a good deal on it and have the money to put into it to improve performance... both of us were interested in performance, but bought the auto's for different reasons, so to say auto = slug = no performance isn't really fair. Simply b/c dsm's didn't all come equal as far as performance mods doesn't mean that all autos can be lumped into the lower performance category.

I just bought a JDM motor, it has a tdo4 turbo so that means it came from an a/t car. I know it has a smaller turbo, intake manifold and exhaust manifold but i was wondering if it came with worse cams then a stock US 1g gsx, and if u know anything else different

I agree with you completely, that's why I used the word "maybe" :D

I did the same thing. I was sent an auto JDM motor by mistake.
There are 3 differences:

Smaller Cams: Im not sure what the lift difference is but Its rather dramatic.

390 injectors: Swap them now.

13g Turbo: This turbo is junk no offence to anyone intended.

+ the things you listed.

After calling up and demanding the proper parts the dude sent them to me within a week.

The performance gains from these small mods alone was substantial.

I changed the title of this thread.

Turbo on 1G automatic = 13G.

Turbo on 1G manual = 14B.

Anywhere in this thread when "13B" is mentioned, it is referring to 13G.

I noticed different companies have different approaches to this. I'm pretty sure the A/T SHO's have a slightly larger displacement to make more power. On the other hand, don't the a/t DSM's have more torque like 210 to the 5spd's 200 or something like that?
